A good Rattle snake

I’m Arizona we have 13 species of rattlesnakes, four are protected and the other 9 can be dispatched if you have a hunting license. I’ve hunted a lot of terrain here and have seen many many rattlesnakes but have never seen any of the four that are listed as protected. I would hope that any of the 13 would be considered fair game if they are that close to your house, probably best to act as judge and jury and just keep to yourself in that case.

You might want to cut it open to see what is inside. We killed a big one like that at our dove field last year; had 13 little ones inside right ready to be born.
Also, took both of my sons PD shooting this year (43 & 47) and the younger one wanted to go out and inspect the carnage after his first day of PD shooting. Found a nice big prairie rattler coiled up by a PD hole with a PD inside. I have shot PD's with those folks for the past 15 years or so and this is the first snake I have ever seen.

Rattlesnake versus prairie dog.

A group of us where riding an old railroad grade, two ladies horses went a little bozo and they ended upon the ground. I dismounted to help, made sure they were OK, got them back on their horses. Stopped up the trail to regroup, be sure everyone was OK. A third lady asked if I heard the rattlesnake, Evidently it was snake that caused the problem. We were in a prime area for rattlesnakes, I've seen many in that general area, which is a state park. Long story short, I immediately got hearing aids. A few years later the area burned, a big area of shrub-steppe country along the river, after the fire all the snakes went to the small town that was the only area that didn't burn. People moved to get away from the snakes.

Took care of this guy for the neighbor lady who emptied a revolver at him and missed all 6 shots. I told her to get some snake shot if she wants to go the gun route again. A whack to the head was all it takes. He was full of stinky, furry critters.....probably rats and mice picking up chicken scratch. We have dogs so the rattlers have to go.rattler.jpg

They are rare in Vermont but I'm not sure but I thought Wisconsin was the only state in the lower 48 that does not have poisonous snakes. Or maybe it was Maine. If I'm not mistaken you have pigmy Rattlers, though their name might need to be changed 'cause it's "waisist".
Wisconsin has Timber Rattlers (the snakes) and a minor league baseball team named Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin also has the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake. It was widely rumored that the DNR introduced some type of rattlesnake 4 or 5 miles from where I live. No way to verify that so it's just a rumor.

What part of the world?

We were about 5 miles? south of Vantage, WA on a R/R grade east of the columbia River. I read a historical account of exploring the river a few miles further south in 1811, 'lots of flat rocks with many rattle snakes'. There is a very large apple orchard south of our location, they don't kill the rattlers, they use them to control the mice and gophers. "Pick up that bottom fruit bin with a fork lift" is the rule. There are large 'scree' slopes just east of the orchards where the snakes can den up for the winter. I've ridden in that area for quite a few years, usually during winter and spring, I've seen snakes in late March till early November. Some seem to den in the cracked basalt along the R/R grade, not much for scree slopes in that area. I think the most I've seen is 3 or 4 in one day. We're not allowed to kill them, State Park, but I do know snake shot in a .38 or ,357 will kill 'em with out a wiggle from horse back.

I am no snake lover for sure but I think the timber is a protected animal.... I have heard stories of game Wardens showing up because of Facebook pictures..... I could be wrong but it's the reason I stopped posting pics like this... That is one dangerous snake....

The timber rattler IS protected in Texas. The game warden/facebook incident happened to one of snakepits
(A.S. member) neighbors in their subdivision. He lives in east Harris county.
