I've got a 7mm WSM with a short barrel - 20 1/2" from the end of the receiver (rem model 7). I'm having trouble getting anything to shoot a decent group. The first cold bore shot can be wild - 4 inches off to the left - then successive shots start to group together. I've tried Federal 140 gr nosler, 160 gr noslers and winchester silver tips. I'm thinking I need to swap barrels. Any suggestions?

Long before i would change a barrel because of a wild first shot I would modify the bedding and after that recut the crown. Also change the scope to one that's know to perform.

Take the stock off now and look at the bedding. Get some black electrical tape and make a shim of some of it folded on itself under the barrel and put it back together.

Bring your screwdrivers and tools along with that tape to the range.

If it does not shoot much better loosen the rear guard screws and shoot it again.

Use a soft folded towel under the forend. Be consistent in how you shoot and hold the rifle.

Federal 210M this is almost identical to my load ,but as I just posted I can't for the life of me get over 2662fps.
Any thoughts ?
Norma or Winchester brass

2775 fps, 26" bbl

I was pleased with how easy it was to tune this load. Almost 1900 rounds through the barrel and it still shoots great.

SSG 7WSM, Lawton 7500, 30" Broughton 5C 8 Twist

Brass: Winchester WSM
Primer: Federal 210 Match
Powder: Reloader 25 65.5 Grain
COAL: 3.190" at the ogive
Velocity: 3,025 FPS.

Took the 7 wsm rifle to the gunsmith Sunday morning to have the neck extended by .020" so I can run cases at 2.095" (coal is now 2.105") instead of the trimmed case length of 2.073" as the coal could only be 2.085", we don't know why the chamber ended up at this original length, most likely the 7 WSM match grade reamer had a shorter than usual length neck. We also re-crowned and extended the throat by .004".

The rifle had fired 650 rounds and the throat had not warn, the gunsmith believes I will get another 800 rounds or more as the barrel was in pretty good condition. I am running at around the 2,970fps with 180 gr VLD Bergers with 66 grs H1000, if I can get a total of 1400 rounds plus, I think that's pretty good.

So I now have the benefit of a true 7 WSM long case (base to shoulder, which is longer than a 300 WSM) and the long neck of a 300 WSM, this should give a bit better barrel life along the lines of a 300 WSM barrel, I hope? I have attached a photo of the new & old brass showing the longer neck.

Berger 190 VLD Hunting
IMR 7828ssc: 67.3 gr
2.911" COAL (touching lands)
Norma 300 WSM, neck turned to 0.0130" (80.4gr H2O cap)

2926 fps at 51F, sd 9
On 14th loading no primer dropouts yet. Annealed after each firing
Av. Precision (not best group) 0.47 moa w x 0.34h 300 yds (prone bipod)

Rifle: blueprinted early 1970's Rem 700 SA, Benchmark MTU 1:10 22", McMillan A1, Nightforce NXS 5.5-22, Custom MB, Harris, tuned 40X trigger

Notes: 190 gr load has taken bull elk at 570 yds.
230 gr. Has considerably more schwack, but no opportunity to test terminal ballistics yet.

Had very accurate Berger 200 Target Hybrid load w/H4350 (61.0 gr, Norma brass, WLRM, Nosler brass but MV 2807 w/sd 12-14 so didn't see the use in this one.

Hope this is helpful to the project.
