7WSM advice... Which brass?

Texas

Silver $$ Contributor
I am looking at building a 7WSM for long range hunting. I see that Norma only make brass for the 270 and 300. Are you guys using either of these cases then necking to the right diameter? I'm assuming the Norma is yielding more accuracy than Winchester brass. Also, which would you recommend, the 270 or 300WSM case and why?
Finally, what kind of velocities can you achieve with the 168s and 180s in a 28 inch barrel? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

If you do have a 7mm WSM chamber then the 270 WSM and 300WSM brass will be .037" short in head space so you would have to fire form the brass out to fit. The 270 and 300 WSMs have shorter base to shoulder than 7mm WSM but correspondingly longer necks.
If you do actually have a 7mm/270 (or 7mm/300WSM, same thing) then you could use either 270 or 300WSM. I use both in mine. Actually due to the brass I had n hand at the time, my 300 WSM uses necked up 270 brass and my 7mm uses necked down 300WSM brass.

Yes, I temporarily used both in 7mm WSM, even necked the .270 up to 7mm WSM. Then commenced to use both cases for wildcat forms of the 7mm RSAUM. For hunting purposes, I would recommend the use of the .270 WSM necked up, because it is considerably less expensive brass.

Have no idea on what velocities you would get with the 168's at all, nor the 180 in a 28-inch barrel. But, I could get up to 3,100 fps in the WSM with a 32-inch barrel, and an easy 3,000 fps in the wildcats in competition shooting.
