783 Varmint

[QUOTE="....If someone made a good aftermarket trigger for them i think that would help their popularity....[/QUOTE]

Timney just came out with a trigger. I have one. Jury is out as to whether it's an improvement. Easy to adjust down to 1.5#, no center safety arm in the trigger blade. The factory triggers are a smidge difficult to get down to 1.5#, but it can be done. The lock time of these actions is superb, probably why they shoot so well. Ggmac, do you have any data on lock time for these actions? If not, how does one do that? Thanks, Mike

Thanks Mike for that info - i may have to try one.

Edit- just went to Buds and the cheapest 783 is 355.00 and there were a number of them over 500.00- dont know if this is because of the run on guns lately or the price is just rising but at these prices they are the same cost basically as a 700? Dont know if they are worth that to me.

There's a formula printed in the book of target receivers and triggers . Not sure if that's the real name or not , no coffee yet . But I'll look it up .
If you compare the cocking ramp to either savage or Rem 700 you'll see the short distance and the firing pin assembly is lighter . I'll look for the book .
I like the 90 deg sear , no upward push on the bolt , that unloads the top lug .

Pics of X7/783 triggers and bolts for comparison. Stand by race fans, I think I got this pic posting chit figured out. :) Edit: Added pic of 257 Weatherby: XL7 action & trigger, XL7 bolt w/783 bolt head, factory laminate XL7L stock, custom 783 prefit barrel. It's a Marlington.

Mike, do you have any ideas about adapting a trigger guard to the 783? I bought and bedded a Remington varmint stock (Boyd's I feel sure) to my 783 and I have two trigger guards that are ruined (torqued to book specs). I took a piece of tubing and filed it to a thickness that allowed me to tighten the action in the stock and opened the hole in the trigger guard it just fits over the screw. I worry that it doesn't distribute the torqued screw pressure like the original guard did. And since it is in a wood stock I also worry that it will compress the wood eventually and never provide a consistent torque. I will try to post a picture tonight.

why dont you just get a metal trigger guard for a 700 adl- available alot of places - and use it. not sure if the screw holes line up but the front screw is just to hold the guard so you could change that location.

I was thinking the 783 trigger with the blade was too long to fit inside. Plus, I am not a machinist, so if it's beyond a dremel or a file, I'm lost!

IMG_20200417_144309.jpg I don't have a 783, but here are pics of a X7 trigger guard. Slightly different shape than the 783. I have replaced all my X7 plastic POS trigger guards with metal ones. I have a bag of these plastic things if you would like to try one. There is a metal replacement available. You just have to drill the rear screw hole to a smidge over 1/4 " and counter sink slightly for the take down screw head. If you think it might work, PM me and I'll send you a plastic one for a check fit. Who knows? Might be a fix. Mike

I posted last year that Rem just changed a few things , mag , bolt spacing , but pretty much the same gun . I'm using the Marlin bolt in my 783 dual port . The Marlin is a better finish and blued and uses if I remember correctly Remington 700 2 piece scope mounts . Different than the 783 which has is cylindrical and takes the same scope base front and rear .

i just measured the 783 trigger sticks down same amount as 700 trigger. also screw spacing in a 700 adl trigger guard is real close to the same as 783- so you could make a 700 adl trigger guard work for your 783. of coarse if a direct replacement metal one is available like mike says could do that to.

I have both one piece and two piece bases for X7s. The Marlin X7 receiver is cylindrical. You can use Win model 70 bases on X7s. Also, IIRC, like a model 70W, the action take down screws for the X7 are 1/4-32.

Friday evening. As a former cheese head who was a "townie" in dairy farm country, we couldn't wait for Fridays. Farmers finally bring their daughters into town. A few PBRs, and let the games begin. To this day, I still like to have a few extra adult beverages on Friday evening.
Back to the ops question about accuracy. My guns are all hunting guns. All of them will shoot ≤0.5 moa off a harris bipod and rear bag. The target pic I posted was shot with virgin formed brass, only thing weighed was powder charge on a Charge Master. The action is in a Boyd's stock, no pillars, no bedding. I did pull the POS plastic bushing Boyd's uses for the front action screw. Replaced it with a stack of 1/4-20 ss washers with a "dress" washer as the last one for cosmetics. Front action screw torqued to 45 in-lbs, rear to 35 in-lbs.
One of this days, I will develops the 'nads to pillar and glass bed the actions. One is gonna have to be the size of a watermelon and the other one a big sunabitch.
So yes 0.4 moa is possible with a good barrel without getting too anal. I have or have had three factory barrels that would routinely shoot ≤ 0.4 moa.

Thanks MikeT49 and Hoz53. Just knowing which way to head is what I was hoping for. Until now, no one has given me measurements. I am going to go ahead and order the Marlin and the Remington 700 ADL to see which might work the best. The Marlin guard, as sold at Brownells is actually for some of their rim fire rifles, not specifically for the X7. I read that the PTG bottom metal is not only expensive, but requires some skill and significant effort for fitting.

My temporary fix is this: I went to ACE hardware and bought some screw hardware close to the right diameter and cut it down to the height I needed to fit the bedding bolt and not protrude into the raceway. I put a washer against the stock to give it some bearing surface. I drilled the original trigger guard hole to 3/8's to fit the outside of the bushing. I forgot that I super glued the home made bushing in or I would have pulled it.

To be honest, the bedding job was my first and I am not impressed by the accuracy compared to the cheap plastic stock that was factory pillar bedded. Maybe I am expecting too much but I was getting some doubling going on so I put it aside, but this thread has awakened my desire to play with it some more.
