The Ruger American thread caused me to ask for experiences with the Remington 783. I recently purchased one in 7mm Rem Mag. The purpose for the rifle will be as a backup gun on a hunting trip West in the mountains. I wanted a rifle in case something was to happen to my main firearm while on the mountain. I haven't shot mine yet, but my first impression is good. Bear in mind that I purchased it on sale, plus Remington has a $40.00 mail in rebate. I will have a whopping $220.00 invested in the rifle. The 783 comes standard with a detachable magazine. It appears to have a barrel system that could be switched without need for a lathe. The trigger has no creep and adjusted to suit me quite well. The stock leaves alot to be desired however, there is very generous free float barrel clearance. Can't say until I work up a load, but all indications are this will be a very adequate backup rifle for the money. Have any of you guys/gals shot one?
