Black Friday: Remington 783, is it worth it?

Gents-
Don't fool yourselves

The 788,Sportsman 78,710,770,783's were manufactured for the week end deer hunters.

The above listed w/exception to the Sportsman78 are consumer disposables that were meant to be thrown away at the end of the deer season.

Will/Do they shoot/go bang-YES but so does a front stuffer/muzzle loader!
Consumer disposables? Really? I'm not seeing that many in the trash cans. Remington, as well as a lot of other manufacturers, are doing their dead level best to make a product that sells, makes a little money for them and maybe any stock holders involved and can still put meat in the freezer or on the table. They are not able to run their prices up like Ford or GM or you would be paying 3-4 times as much for that Remington and if they could I bet it would be a dang nice one with real wood and real craftsmanship. Of course they wouldn't sell that many. I thank you for your opinion, but with over 30,000 members on this sight I'm sure that not all of them have 3500.00 Bench Rest or Hunting Rigs. Now, just my opinion about the "fp" and "bs" see here on sometimes.
Now, back to my coffee.

I hope my abbreviation of firing pin fp and bolt shroud bs didn't offend any one
I found there is a piece of metal in the white- inside the bolt body that acts as a lug to hold the FP assembly in the bolt
this metal is soft and deformed after only a few bolt cycles , 100 or so estimated..
I cant see how it will hold up for extended use , taking the (ridge of deformity ) off helped with bolt closure effort
but the extractor is still adding quite a bit - may have to weaken the spring -not sure what the answer is on the extractor- Im just glad I got a chance to work on one before ordering one for myself - I had high hopes for the 783 -It has a lot of good design features -just not enough QC , maybe I got a lemon to work on, Ill wait till I get another to work on and see ... meanwhile my 700's and 110's shine the brighter

Sorry to hear about your 783 . I'm got aprx 600 -700 rds thru my 6 BR and about 200-250 thru my 30 br . I just took a look at mine ,6 br , as I was cleaning it today . I see the part but mine is still looking like a new one I just bought ( Walmart ,7 mm mag with scope , $279 )

if that piece could be made of hardened steel it would be a great rifle -with this soft metal I can foresee issues as it continues to wear and let the fp go forward -hopefully they will address this issue- I have heard of others on the web who said some had hard or rough bolt closure - and if there was more than one try them all till you found a smooth one - I can only assume this soft metal is the issue with those specimens, some one will come up with a fix im sure, with this issue fixed , the trigger creep addressed and a new stock , it would make a fine rifle

The hard bolt closures is a tolerance stack I believe . If the bolt shroud hits the rear receiver , a big no no , it's forcing the shroud back while camming the bolt forward , easy fix . Remove enough to clear . The other possible issue , firing fin spring is over compressing and going solid , again a easy fix . These issues will peen the bolt disassembly lug , but under no conditions would it let the firing pin fall . Just the opposite is true , the firing pin and shroud would spring out of the bolt as the sear is trying to compress the spring the pressure would push the assembly out not forward . All these issues should be addressed by Remington , but they failed again . Anyone working on theses would be wise to address the issues just mentioned .
I don't work or ever have worked for Remington , I've always been a Svage fan until I worked on one of the 783 .
One way to determine hard bolt closure Is to eliminate each part , cartridge , extractor , firing pin , interference with shroud .
Make a dummy case , NO PRIMER ! NO POWDER , have the trig pulled while closing , is it still hard to close ? Next remove the shroud and firing pin assem , insert DUMMY case and close bolt , still hard ? Remove extractor , repeat , still hard ?
My bet is it will be found to be the shroud hitting and putting undue stress while closing , your basically trying to stretch the bolt , thereby deforming the bolt assembly lug .

Most hunting rifles wont see 100rds in 50yrs. Its a win win for remington. I bet they wont have to fix 25 of those and they saved a ton on hardening. Like dan said its a weekend deer rifle- never meant for thousands of rounds to go out and id bet a dollar they didnt design it with that barrel nut so you could change barrels period much less designed to use savage barrels
