7 PRC Load Development

I read about a test a guy did were he turned the belt if some cases and bumped them just like a non belted case and everything was fine, in my opinion thats how a belted case needs to be sized just like a non belted case

I think guys hurt new belted cases at the web by firing them to hot the first time, belted cases are generally pretty short at the datum line.
I jam a bullet into the lands and back the charge down on first firing ive never had a problem this way
Yah I don't run mine hot either. Not sure if it helps on the sizing, but it definitely helps on case life. I shoot a ton of belted magnums, more than anything else really if I had to guess. I've never had those issues myself. 240 WBY, 264 Win Mag, 7 Rem Mag, 7 STW, 7-300 Win, 300 Win Mag, 300 WBY, 338 Win Mags. They all feed like butter and get 10-15 firings a case.

One advantage 7PRC could have on this side of the pond is most ranges have energy limits. A 180gr at 2850 would fit nicely just under the ~3,300 ft/lb limit. Meaning you could shoot a 24" factory rifle without issues. Not one I imagine our US cousins have to worry about. I quite fancy a 7RM if good brass was easier to find, just because. The main issue is the twist rate and throat on the factory rifles, if you can find one, is too slow/short for the 180's.

As someone that is looking at a 7mm factory rifle the 7PRC looks a good option. I'm waiting to see if Lapua make brass for it. If you are talking custom rifles then there are lots of options. For the average range shooter wanting a cost effective but accurate rifle the recent Hornady offering are pretty good.
Petersen is making cases. We have tried them and they are equal to or better than any Lapua offering. You can look on Petersen's website to find the correct AMP Aztec code for your Lot#

When I got my 7 PRC, I was worried about ammo availability and considered reloading. But time has gone by and it is now readily available from both Hornady and Federal.

I had learned long ago that box MV was wishful thinking or the perfect rifle set up in a vice grip. Mostly because they have to average the charge weight and seating depth because they have no way of knowing what rifle it will be used in. Mine is in a chassis and I have to use the AICS metal mag for .300 Win Mag, 7 PRC being technically a magnum round but in a standard long action, not a magnum action.

In fact, at the Hornady page for 7 PRC, they mention that if you already have a 7 RM or .300 WM action, you can simply change barrels to a 7 PRC.

I have over 200 rounds of the Precision Hunter 175 gr ELD-X. And since I am a hunter, I am interested in 3 shot groups and it shot .64 inches. This is fine out to 600 yards though I am more likely going to be shooting at no more than 300 to 400 yards, plenty of impact velocity to petal out. In fact, I have recently entertained the idea of switching to CX Outfitter 160 gr for the mule deer in my state though I mostly hunt for whitetail. For that, any one of my .308s would do at 300 yards and closer.

Even if the factory is slower that the box, that is okay for me, as long as I know what the real MV is. And all the ammo out there is going to have different MV than the box.

FWIW, my 7 PRC has a 24 inch barrel.

If I had already had a 7 RM, I might have just stayed with that. But the 7 PRC is marketed to people just like me. Never had a long action or a 7 mm or any magnum cartridge before. A factory rifle that can shoot factory ammo pretty welll because of the SAAMI spec.

First three were fighters. Just needed velocity.

I should have written “same group” not same hole.

The ladder I did with my 300 PRC was same hole.

One hole.
