6x47 using 222 Magnum case

I don't have a chronograph but the load I am running requires 10 clicks from my scope to go from a 100 yard to 200 yard zero with 1/8 MOA clicks.

That's about 2.5 inches, and point blank software puts this at between 3200 and 3300 FPS with the 70gn Speer TNT in my 25" barrel. The long barrel and a full case of the slower burning 8208 powder really gets them crankin!

which powder seems to give the best accuracy for the 6x47? Especially for the lighter weight bullets. I have a slow twist.
I've just tried IMR 4895 thus far.
Thanks.

I can hardly wait to star shooting this cartridge! I got my whidden gun works dies yesterday and they are works of precision! They made them using the reamer print. I should get the reamer any day...everything else is waiting. I even have some 62 knight's
made with the short jacket and with no freebore, these should shoot ,perhaps, better than they do in my 6x45. I had jgs modify the reamer...shoulder angle is 30° which results in slightly less taper in the case, thus a slight increase in case volumn. The neck is.002 over loaded neck and chamber length is .015 longer than case length...tight chamber. I was going to use powders that shoot well in the 6x45, just a bit more. I've tried the new LT 30 in a 20 TAC, 6mm BR and 22mm BR with very good results. May be a bit fast since it seem to be slightly faster than h4198, but herein lies the fun part of this hobby. I can post pics now, so I will hopefully have some bug hole targets to share.

my gun is born!! shot it on sunday and am VERY happy. shots number 2,3,4,5 and 6 printed the .3 in group. the .25 group is likely to be bettered as i try faster powders. n133, 27 gr fills just into the neck but not compressed...could do this but i have an aversion to compressing powder. since i had the reamer made with a 30 degree shoulder the fireformed cases have a little more volume so i will see if 27.5+ will fit. also will try h4198 which is a bit faster. LT 32 shot well and i have some LT30. i would like to get 3500 fps with 60-62 gr bulllets without pressure. the 60 bergers went 3400+ fps so i"ll work on this. all mvs are exceeding what i got in the 6x45 which was my goal with the 6x47. the whidden dies are fantastic! interestingly, the brass i'm using is very old remington. i neck turned them and noted a lot of runout in the neck but it was all gone after fireforming and i did not have to bump the shoulder on cases shot yesterday. hotter loads will probably need bumping. whidden also provided a bump gauge with the dies...first class! this one is fun.

Okay, you put up the same Topic on "Shooting Australia" where I can't comment but you haven't got any decent replies.

For a start, 2000 rounds and it's getting near the end. Why waste $250AU or more to have it re-chambered when that is near half the cost of a new barrel which is under $600AU landed here from the USA then get a Smith to chamber that for you.

If the new barrel is $600, and the fitting annd chambering is $250 - thenhe saving $600, which is a fair amount to most people.

If you set back a barrel, and rechamber it - you are now starting with a new barrel - the "worn" part is removed in the setback.

Perhaps you should have a good long talk with a Gunsmith and discuss the safety / practical terms of the idea. Yet alone accuracy issues.

There are no safety issues, and the accuracy of the cartridge already has a long, and positive history.

Cool little project gun!
Glad to see its showing promise right out the gate. Please keep on with the updates & have fun!!!

I have to comment on the statement "2000 rounds and its getting near the end"

the 6x47R is not a bbl eater, and many have easily gone 4000+ and still been bug hole shooters, I have experienced that and know many in the 70'-80's when the round was more prevalent to do the same.

shot LT30 yesterday and was impressed. temp was 93 in the shade. no pressure signs yet so i will continue trying to get an accurate load with 3500 fps. i have accurate load with sl lower speed, so may stay put. shooting free recoil off my portable bench and am impressed with the stability.

Shot my new 6x47 Remington prone rifle for the first time yesterday. Load was 26.5 grains of Benchmark with 90gr Lapua Scenar. After taking four shots to get centered up at 200 yards,(new sights) I proceeded to shoot the rest of the string clean on the metric target, destroying 6 golf tees in the process. Now for load development!

i did it! got 3500 fps safely yesterday with no excessive pressure signs. temp was 94 degrees so LT30 seems to be temp stable. love these 62 euwins. next will try 63,64 and 65 gr bullets. my chamber is slightly different in that i had my reamer made with shoulder pushed forward .027 and shoulder angle is 30 degrees, so case capacity is slightly more than standard 6x47.

My kreiger is 27 inches, 13.5 twist. Now for the not so good news...I feared the primer pockets of the rem brass would not like the pressure required to get 3500 fps. 1 of 4 are quite loose and another one is a little loose, the other 2 are OK. Not sure I want to trash 1/4 fired brass, so I am going to reduce the charge to the 3550 node LT30, 26.3-26.5 gr. These loads shot overlapping groups and same mv. My current brass was manufactured in the late 60's. I have some of more recent production and will try it but suspect it's pockets will act same. This is part of the fun.

my 6x47 R is no longer a virgin! i took her afield yesterday. there were two ghogs grazing in a freshly mowed field and they did not see me. have selected the 62 euwin bullet, hollowpointed by me, and lt 30 as the load. the first ghog stood at 180 yds and was DRT...6# soaking wet. the second gave me a horizontal shot and went down instantly...10#. mv is 3450 fps so i am going to push the range as targets permit.

Good going lpreddick.
I'd never heard of LT 30 before but this weekend the LGS had some & also the 62 gr. Euwins so I put your load together & will run it in my rifle as I have pretty much the same twist.
Up to now I've got my best results with the 64.25 gr column bullet but nothing like your groups. I've also recently had the action bedded & the barrel free floated.
I'll let you know.

Beruisis

I bought three batches of 222 rem mag brass off the market place for my gun. One batch weighed the lightest and unfired. Primer pockets were loose with first primer and totally loose after first firing, even with a light load. Oldest brass(40+ yrs) has snug primer pockets after slightly stout loads but can't take 3500 fps load. My current gsmith advises buying Norma 204 ruger brass, anneal, neck expand in steps to 6 mm. He says this brass can take near 60,000 psi whereas 222mag is good only around50,000+-. I thought 204 ruger brass was hard to find but found midway had the Norma 204 in stock!!! 200 cases are on the way! I found some herter's brass and have bought 10 to see if they can take it. The midway brass is less expensive, so I hope they work. I was advised expanding 204 ruger would not work...too thin. A report will follow.

Took mine to the range today to try 80gn Bergers and ADI AR2206H (H4895)
Website lists 27dns as max but I pushed it up to 28 gns with a node at 27.8gns that shot 0.2" group.
This is a heavily compressed load with the powder filling the case to the top and then packed by the seated projectile.
Next trip I will use this load and try and tune it up a bit with seating depth changes.

I really believe the gun can shoot in the 1's

What a fantastic cartridge!

Rather than use Rem 222Mag brass, I'd do a 6/204. A better case to begin with........30* shoulder that's further forward, more case capacity, and a much better selection of brass.

6x47 on a 222Magnum Case, well I'm sure it's an experiment for someone that has all the gear, Chamber Reamer, Dies etc but in my opinion you are wasting your time and good money. Isn't that where the current 6x47L started off many years ago then moved onto to greater pastures and accuracy.

Hardly an "experiment".......that cartridge has been around longer than you have, and it was popular/successful with benchrest shooters before there was a PPC.

That isn't where the 6x47L began, they're not at all similar.
