6x47 using 222 Magnum case

Thanks Bob..... much appreciated.

I'm in Australia so i only really have access to ADI powders.... if I'm lucky. The great American buyup has stopped supply of almost all but a slight trickle of imported powders and most of the Australian made powder is being sent to the US market, short changing us.

Looking at the powders you have listed I'm thinking its just going to be trial and error with the same powders used in the 222 and 223.

I have a 222 and have a good selection of powders to try.

Im really looking forward to this :)

Cheers

I have received a couple of PM's recently asking about the progress of this build, and with a smile on my dial, I picked it up today.

I had the action cerakoted in Titanium, and the bolt done in black micro slick. The SS Krieger has been polished...... just because i like shiny stuff 8)

I put the bolt back together, and fitted my Jewel trigger

I then dummy fitted it all up to the stock, fitted the rail and scope to make sure everything goes together without any issues. All i had to do was remove about 1 thread from the front action screw which wasn't original to this rifle.

I made up 3 dummy rounds to test the mag and feeding for rapid fire comp courses.
It Feeds perfect, but the bottom of the feed rails need polishing up as there is a sharp edge scratching the cases somewhere.

You can see in the picture below, the magazine has had the 223 spacer removed and is now using a modified 308 magazine spring holding the 223 mag follower at the back of the magazine. This will give me all the room i need to seat my projectiles as far out as required without having to worry about magazine length.

Pics below of how the final product will look.

EGW 0 MOA rail and Weaver rings holding a Sightron SII Big Sky 6-24 scope.
Stock is off a Remington 5R Milspec 223 and will work perfect for what i want to do.

Now i have to strip it all down again and bed it into the stock....... I will take pics :)

Cheers

The combination you have put together is great looking, makes me want to re do a 223 I have to the old girl.

lots of luck at the range - keep us posted.

the original 6x47mmm shot best on the warm to hot side, so work up slow but don't be supprised as the bug holes come on the high end, 7 1/2 primers were the ticket as rem designed them for the added pressure of the 222 cases.

Question:

I have ordered a redding S Type full length resizing die for the 6x47. Its gunna cost me about $240 delivered.

I just had a thought........ the 222 and 222 mag case dimensions are identical apart from the mag being a few millimeters longer.
For the odd chance i may get tight cases, would i be better off buying a Redding 222 shoulder bump die and reaming the neck opening to 6mm?

That should take care of tight head spacing if i experience it, and i could then just neck size as normal

Thoughts?

Redding does not make a shoulder bump die - they do make a body die (a full size body and shoulder die, without the neck section). Forster makes bump dies, but it would have to be special order in that calibre.

If your chamber winds up a wee bit short, then lap a shell older down on #400 silicone carbide paper until the cases fit the way you want them to - it is ALWAYS better to modify a shell holder than a die.

Hi CatShooter

Do you know the redding part number? I have looked but could not find anything ???

I stripped the rifle back to bits again today and prepped it all for a dose of Type F Devcon.
Taped the bottom of the action and put the blind bolts in with tape to align the action in the pillars. Coated it all in polish and put it aside.
I then took to the stock with a dremel to remove material and make way for a good solid bed.
I removed some of the black plastic along the side rails of the alloy bedding block

I then took some material out of the front and back of the main action seating area making sure nothing was touching anywhere except the little bit at the rear used for height reference. I also drilled some holes 3 to 5mm deep to act as pillars for the bedding, adding structure and strength.

I was drilling some holes in the black plastic stuff the stock is made from, where i planned to extend the bedding under the first inch of barrel. I noticed it was a hollow in the alloy block full of plastic. Not wanting to bed on top of plastic, I hooked in with the dremel again and cleaned it out, planning to fill it with Devcon to add strength to the bedding under the barrel and action, bonding it directly to the alloy block in the stock.

Mixed up the devcon, slopped it in, yada yada yada....... now for the long wait to see if it comes back out!

Finally got it up to the range to do some development after running in the barrel and fire forming the cases on a previous day.

While I was fire forming, I tried out 4 different powders and decided to give the 8208 a run today.

I was using CCI BR4 primers and Speer 70gn TNT's seated for a 0.010 jump.

Started with a mild load and worked it up 0.3gn at a time. Accuracy was average with 0.75" groups until i hit a load that I would call safe max as the primers were flattening out.

groups are 0.25" which will do me

I also found a reduced load with 7gn's of ADI AS30N (same burn rate as red dot) with the 70gn TNT's and we ran them over a chronograph for 1720 FPS. A perfect mild load for rapid fire comp stages!

I think this is going to be a ripper of a rifle!

Cheers

now you know why so may folks loved this round --only the advent of the ppc and br cases put it to sleep, it still lives a very useful life,

enjoy

I was hoping you would have included pics of the bedding after the barreled receiver was removed. I thought there was a guy in Australia now making 6mm match bullets which might be less money than importing from the states. I think your rig looks fantastic! I have 3 that look similar , actually 4 of them. Splendid job and keep us updated when you find just the right combo that bugholes every group. great caliber too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jon Lennon

I've been shooting the 6TCU . Amazingly forgiving . Fire forming my groups were 1/2" or less .
I now have 2 , a 1-14 tw and a 1-10 , the 1-10 loves 87 gr the other 70 .

Ahh the bedding, yes I forgot to post that up. I have had a busy couple of months with work and forgot.
I shall dig the pic up off my laptop tonight and post it.

Match grade 6mm pills are like rocking horse poop. It's hard enough to get basics like brass, powder and primers with almost nothing making it to Australia these days.
I have about 1000 berger 80gn HP varmint pills I might try in it. They should work well in the 1:10 twist.
I also have half a box of the 88gn berger high BC pills I will try as well.

It's amazing how many people ask why I didn't just build a 6x45. My answer is that I hold a grudge against the 223 and its variants for killing off the 222 and its variants.
I will always be a 222 boy. I buy brass when I find it. Clean it and store it.

Cheers

Love the finished rifle. Based on your initial experience, yours is running true to form; as bheadboy has mentioned previously, they do like to be run pretty much full throttle - best accuracy and flattened primers were often companions in the old days with that round. ;D

Bedding photo.

There were a couple air bubbles under the barrel which cheesed me off a tad but it wont affect anything.

I ended up with a perfect full length bed from 1" down the barrel to the back of the action, all bonded to the stocks integral alloy bedding block. Before i bedded it, the action only touched in 4 small places with very little contact surface.

Used Type F Aluminum Devcon

I do love a rifle that shoots best at full stick 8)

I just got a Kimber HB in 6x47.
Scoped it with Leup 6.5 - 20 x.
First rattle out of the box got good groups but also fliers.
Getting it free floated & bedded now.
Then back to the range.

I found mine worked well with .010 jump and did tend to toss fliers until the load got hot and just like magic...... Little groups appeared

Brewz: i'v been following this thread for awhile as i am seriously thinking about a 6x47/222mag. i have a 6x45 and it shoots tiney hole with the lighter bullets but i'm not getting the speed i want... this cartridge will. you mentioned a redding type s fl bushing die for $240. did redding have it in stock or was it a special order and how long did it take for you to get it? i hav other type s dies and love them. what about a bullet seater? i have all the other components. thanks for the help.

I ended up cancelling the type s redding die as once I payed for it plus freight to Australia plus the conversion to aus dollars I was up for $350. It was a special order and I recall there was a "many" months wait.
I found that an Australian company called simplex make a standard FLS die so I got one off them for 1/4 the price.
I had to order it through Sinclair international as Redding would not sell to me direct.
I don't know if you will get much more velocity from the 6x47. Your best bet would be to have it cut with a deeper throat and take advantage of the extra neck length to seat the projectiles out further which will increase case capacity.
The 223 and 222 mag have almost identical capacity with the 222 mag being just a couple % bigger.
With the spacer removed from the back of the remington short action magazine I can seat 100+ gn VLD's out a long way with room to move in the magazine

Seating and neck sizing dies...... Wilson!

Cheers
