6SLR and Barrel length

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
What are reasonable velocities with a 24" and a 26" tube length with a 6SLR shooting 105 class bullets?

The idea is to build something that can achieve 3100 or so with 105s and not have to beat the brass to death. Can it be worked with a 24" tube or do you need to run a 26" to get there?

I can get close to that with h1000, but not quite. I can surpass those with h4831sc, h4350 and retumbo pretty easy.
Xdeano
24" barrel

43.5 gns. of 7828ssc gets me 2940 out of a 22" Krieger with 105 hybrids. Reached 3000 but signs of pressure showed up. Settled on this load shoots lights out. Good luck.

Working on the final stages of a build for a PRS type rifle. I'm debating heavy vs medium palma contour and whether to go 24" or 26". Ideally I'd love to do a 24" medium palma to save a bunch of weight if it would get the velocity. But 26" wouldn't be the end of the world.

I really don't think it needs a heavy palma, but again, I could probably work with one of them, the extra stiffness and heat sink wouldn't hurt, esp if it would work at 24".

All I have left to get are dies, barrel, and reamer, the reamer and dies I've got sourced, the barrel I just have to decide on contour and order, but I need to decide on length before I have the smith mount it.

The Big Velocity Producers for this case with the 105class bullets are. Retumbo, IMR 7828 SSC, H1000, Norma MRP, R25, and Ramshot Magnum... Dont Laugh,, Ole Ramshot Magnum shot real well in a Buddies 6SLR and it meters like a dream. After seein his results I would give it a try if I was shooting some testical/ Tactical type matches.

Suggest a 24" medium palma for shooting PRS style matches. Contour/length I'm using in a 6x47, nice balance. Shooting PRS style matches the little loss of velocity going from 26 to 24 is nothing.

Update

Won a barrel in Phoenix, just bought a reamer.

Getting closer, now all I have left to get are dies and powder and I can do this.

For those with experience, which powder in a 24" barrel reaching for as much MV as you can reasonably achieve? N160 or H1000? or something different

80 rounds on a 26 Benchmark, I chose Rem var. for the taper for prs style shooting. handles much better than the MTU did. 105 hybrids are going 3015 with 47 gr of H 1000. I ran my test up to 48.2 grains and had no pressure signs but 3000 fps was my target speed. the slr seems very forgiving to load for. and in limited testing at 1K the vertical is very good. I used the shorter reamer.

I just bought a reamer from the classifieds with a .078 freebore. I'm planning to run 107s to start with. If I feel it's too short I can get a unithroater from PT&G. I've got them for 30s and 224s and they work well if you are patient.

I'm going to run a Med Palma, it was always my plan. The challenge now is how short to cut it. Looking at the info out there on the precision rifle blog it looks like the majority of the players are running 26s. I guess I'll start there, I can always shorten it.

Mine is a 24" med Palma. My reamer has a .130 freebore. That's what Dave Kiff sent me when I told them that I want to run the 105 hybrids.

I couldn't bring myself to wait another 6 to 9 months for Kiff to send me something I ordered.

My last 3 orders have not been the smoothest.

They had it to me in 6 weeks.

I'm not going to go into it here, but so far, at least in my case, they have over promised and under delivered.

Good idea. .you can always cut it down, but it's a pain to try to get the grooves to line up so you can weld more barrel to it. ;D

I'm chopping at the bit to get my SLR up and going but it's almost planting season so I won't have much time to shoot it if I did have it anyway. .lol so no worries. .but I went with a 26" Remington varmint contour. 7.5 twist.

Mine's 22"...I'm at 3020fps with 4831sc...I bought it from a guy and this was his back up. He was using Hybrid 100 and said he was shooting it at 3100fps. At the time I bought the gun I couldn't get H100 but 4831sc was available. I bought enough that I won't try the H100.

Good luck.

So I have two questions on the 6 SLR:
1) Is anyone using brass other than Winchester or Remington? I have not found any readily available in the last few months. What is the next best alternative? Hornady? I know that the Lapua creates donuts.
2) Which reamer are the PRS guys using? Is there a reamer that is better for Lapua or Hornady Brass?
Sorry for riding the coat tail of this thread
