6SLR and Barrel length

Nowind0 said:
So I have two questions on the 6 SLR:
1) Is anyone using brass other than Winchester or Remington? I have not found any readily available in the last few months. What is the next best alternative? Hornady? I know that the Lapua creates donuts.
2) Which reamer are the PRS guys using? Is there a reamer that is better for Lapua or Hornady Brass?
Sorry for riding the coat tail of this thread

MOShooter has a reamer that is a .120 FB, mine is a .078 FB, I'll get back here as soon as mine gets built with some bullet length specs

Looking at the info at the bottom of the page on the 6SLR at 6mmAR.com they have some seating depth numbers for various bullets with the reamer prints shown. Assuming my .078 FB has a similar leade I think it's going to be about perfect for mag length bullets.

They show the ideal OAL for a sierra 107 with a .075 reamer at 2.842 touching the lands and about .025 in front of the neck shoulder junction. About all you can get in an AICS mag with the front plate is 2.850. They don't have info on the 105 Berger, but it's probably close.

If you go to mags w/o a front plate you can get to 2.9+ oal, but you need to have the action milled because the bullets won't feed that long.

Nowind,

if you go to 6mmAr.com there are two reamer drawings the first one is longer freebore for single shots or longer magazines I think I remember .120 freebore, .076 (or so is the next one for running in AICS mags. that is the one I have, at 20 thou jump with 105 hybrids, the cartridge takes up most all the mag. If I'll be chasing the lands much I'll have to take the spacer out of the front. there is a third reamer shorter yet but I think it also has different body sizes for a ar type platform. if you spec a reamer you could go some shorter in freebore to give some more room.

Hornaday, win and rem brass work, the buzz on Lapua and Norma is the brass in the shoulder is thicker than the neck and so when you make the new longer neck you have a doughnut issue or a possible doughnut issue. I just got some brass, GFI is the brand I think from Southwest Ammo. I am going to see if that will work just for fun as I have a bunch of Win brass sized to 6slr.

Thanks Guys,
Yes, I have reviewed Robert's site on the OAL by reamer. I just did not know if there was a different reamer required with Hornady brass. Looks like there is none.
If you guys are shooting the repeater chamber, what is your experience in shooting the DTACs? I am planning to shoot the 105-108 class mainly, but a guy likes to have options.

I'll chime in with a brass comment. Probably all makes will work fine as this is a very easy cartridge to tune and seems to be pretty forgiving on the barrels. While I use mine for 600 f-class out of a 30" & Borden action all I use is Lapua for brass. I spec'd my own reamer but basically its a .272nk & 120fb. I use H1000 with the Dtacs @ 2930". I get a donut in about 10% of the cases and isn't an issue since most bullets are well above the donut..I don't worry about it. As you might have mag length issues it could be a factor. The dtac hits the donut @ approx 2.83 coal and I'm well above that. I rotate in a new barrel every 1500 rounds and haven't retired one yet. High time one is over 2000. If I remember correctly that's equals about 20 thou. of erosion., Don't be afraid to try the 107smk's + H4350=3145' also a VERY good load. Have fun its an awesome cartridge. Eric in DL

I've already got H1000 and 107SMKs, in fact I've got everything I need except my barrel. It's supposed to be here shortly from Satern.
