It works well. The necks come out straight and we'll formed, once you get the pressure right. I use different powders and just stuff a pinch of cotton or even paper towel on top of the powder column, to hold the powder in place. You can control brass length with pressure. They will come out a few thou longer than expanding up with a mandrel, when the pressure is where you want it.

Thanks for all the info. It's a bunch to take in. I was hoping to at least get my feet wet with the existing barrel. Owner says it has 800 rds. Course if it were a match winner, I doubt it would be for sale. I bet there are some used dies/bushings around if y'all are converting to the 268 necks. I'm trying to ease into this.

Would a flat base or boat tail bullet be best for starting out?

Butch I have a whole keg of Red Dot, wonder if it would work as well as Bullseye?

rsmith, wouldn't a 30BR take a bigger bolt face?

Just some reassurance on your idea. I specifically bought a couple used 6ppc guns to learn with. The first one was a beauty. My first load test showed me that the rifle was extremely accurate. I decided to find another to learn with so I didn't burn out the barrel of the first. The second gun was an old warhorse with a 1000 rounds on it. A gun I couldn’t “hurt” with my fumbling thru the learning process.

you really need to ensure your reamer is neck long for this.
my brass is typically 1.545 long.
if you have a short neck you just end up cutting off good material.

Just another option is that his existing neck can be opened up by a good smith. Going this route, I think 800 rounds is a good time to freshen up the throat while it's in the lathe and from the same setup. I've done this several times. Just finishing one for a National Champ shooter, doing just this very thing.

No, but I did the exact same thing to my UL rifle right before it came to life last season. It's my best shooting rifle but I didn't shoot it well at the Nationals. The Custom carried me on that day.

or just buy a 30br to start with and do not play silly games requiring some more help for a new player.
you have guns ,you have a lathe(or 2,) he is just starting in SCORE.

Mr Smith, if you remember he said he wanted a 6ppc. My suggestion of rebating his BR brass would allow him to only have to buy a barrel and chamber it to be covered for score and group.
I think the silly game would be buying another rifle or another bolt, barrel, and chamber to cover the PPC and BR.

JMHO, but a 30 Major(Grendel) will out shoot a 30 BR and it fits a PPC bolt. And...no silly rebating rims.

I know...and I'm just having fun with ya but it is a very good option. I also know that you advocate rebating rims. I just don't agree, when there is a very competitive alternative. Yes, it is at the very least, a competitive alternative. I've done and I've owned bunches of both. Sometimes, that's the difference in what gets posted on the internet.
Sure, if you or anyone else subscribes to the idea that any given cartridge has to be superior based on what the majority does...they should buy a lathe, have a special cutter ground, add more brass prep, be without brass otherwise or pay a buddy who has the stuff to do it...when he gets around to it. Or, you can neck up 6.5 Grendel brass, turn just like a 30br...and go shoot.

Either way will get you to the same place.

Wait a hold it fellers. I ain't sure what I want to shoot Wanting to start with a 6PPC because that's how the rifle will come. The 30 stuff does sound interesting for sure.

It was mentioned that he wants to shoot score and has a dedicated ppc bolt. A good point was made about a 30 cal having a clear advantage in score shooting, due to the bigger bullet hole...Good advice, unless you/he shoots UBR score, where it's caliber neutral. No advantage to shooting fatter bullets. That was not made clear, that I've seen in this thread. Rebating rims was brought up as an option for shooting a 30 on his ppc bolt and I mentioned a 30 based on a ppc bolt face.

I think we're still on subject but it has drifted a bit.

What action ? Some will do both PPC and BR, like Borden. If you don’t like recoil the 30 ppc is easy on the shoulder. I had great shooting AR in 30PPC. However, I relied on the 30BR one I got serious about it.
