Sir, a dumb question I'm sure, but the action on this rifle is glued in. Would that hinder a gunsmith from opening up the neck?

It would not.

When you say freshen up, what does that mean? Rechamber or something different?

The neck and the throat can be machined in separate ops or there are special reamers thathe can do both at once, called appropriately, neck/throat reamers.

Sorry, I have never tried that. I have always expanded to 6mm first. I don’t have a .22 caliber barrel for my benchrest guns.

22 cal BR barrel? You don't need a 22, 6mm, or other barrel to fireform. I use a 22cal barrel to fireform my 30BR brass. You just need a barrel with the proper chamber in it.

start with a 30 br for score, not a 6ppc.
so buy a different rifle.
almost everything that has been said applies to 30br to, different powder, based on a 6mr case, neck thickness/dia options
imho easier to tune.

rsmith, wouldn't a 30BR take a bigger bolt face?

HT, I shoot my 30BR with my PPC bolt. I just rebate the rims.

It is a very easy job on anybody's lathe. You are only turning about .020" off the BR brass. Even if you have to pay a buddy, it is a lot cheaper than another bolt or rifle.

Edit: Unless you're shooting a 10.5-pound gun. For learning the fundamentals in benchrest a .30 caliber produces too much recoil in a LV/SP, in my opinion.

You're on the right track in buying a used BR rifle. You'll learn a lot even with a used barrel. Nothing is easier to learn on than a 6PPC, because there is so much good info out there. I sold my Borden-smithed Panda 6PPC to a guy in California, along with some brass and bullets. His first 100-yard 5-shot group was a 0.104.

I first fireform without a bullet, 20 grns of Bullseye and candle wax to seal the neck. It takes very little to expand the neck and then turn.

You bump a 220 russian until it chambers in your 6ppc chamber without expanding, fire it as a 22 then run your expander in and turn it. Its the simplest way i assure you

I do it butchs way sometimes but i also use cheap ole 22 bullets to do it too since i have way more rifle powder in surplus than pistol powder. Yes you can shoot a 22 cal bullet in a 6mm chamber just fine

It seems like this would work making 30BR brass as well. Have you tried going from 6mm to 30 cal using this method? How about you @Dusty Stevens
