6mm vs 6.5mm

6mm vs 6.5mm for long range?

Calibers would be something like 243 or 243 ai, vs 6.5 creed or 260 area.

Benefits, 6.5 can have higher bc but slower speeds. 6mm still high bc with screaming velocity more barrel burner?

Opinions?

It will be targets at as far as I can shoot, and varmint hunting. But mainly targets from 600-1000 for fun and practice

If you are talking about "Long-Range" as in 800+ yards AND you are considering a 243 or the A.I. variant, here is something to think about. Your barrel life on either of those 6mm's is limited indeed! So if you want to talk "apples to apples" look at a 6.5 barrel burner>>>the 6.5 x 284. Shoot 140 hybrids at approximately 3000 f.p.s. you would FAR outclass those other 2 barrel burners. If you don't want to burn up barrels, you are looking at a 6mmDasher or BRX. In which case against the Creedmoor / .260 OR the 6.5 x 47 Lapua, you STILL have a wind advantage with the 6.5's. Much of it will depend on what discipline you are endeavoring to excel in.. Benchrest OR F-Open OR Tactical? In Benchrest you might have the argument for a toss-up, in F-Open or Tactical, there is no argument..

I have three different 6mm's - 6SLR, 6XC, and 243AI. No other calibers or cartridges. I shoot groundhogs as far as I can find them plus steel out to 1000 yards. So I prefer the 6mm to a 6.5mm.

BUT!!! If I were to ATTEMPT to compete against Erik in his F Class sport and I had to choose between 6 and 6.5 - well, then give me a 6.5-284 or anything faster and more accurate. ;)

Both work well out to 1000. I have a 243 AI right now, but use to shoot a 6.5-284 and the 6.5 is better in the wind. Biggest difference is if you miss steel or hit at a 1000, it's sure hard to see any splash with the 105gr. I'm running the 243 AI at 3140 fps with 105 VLDs and ran the 6.5 at 3100 fps with 139 Scenars. My 6.5 barrel almost lasted 1200 rds.

I won't be competing that's forsure. I just want to use it as a target/practise gun. I have lots of property to be shooting on and want to have a little fun. My 300. Winny is expensive to shoot all day, and loud so the little 6.5/6mm would be nice. I currently have a 243. Win and love the thing! Unbelievably accurate but it won't stabilize the 105's so thinking of maybe rebarreling or maybe rechambering

Matt....what is your current twist??? I love my 243s and won't part with them, even though I'm a huge 308 fan. I know of plenty 243 Winchesters that have had thousands of rounds fired and still tack drivers. Not by BR standards, but still great. One catch.....just shoot conservatively and don't overheat it.

6.5 RSAUM with either 130`s or 140`s

I`m building one to handle just about anything North America has for big game, varmints too.......... 8)

The 130`s pointed up have a B.C. of .600 the 140`s even higher.

I HAVE THE 6MM RIFLES AND ALSO 6.5 RIFLES THE 2 243 ACKLEY I HAVE IS VERY ACCURATE AT THOSE DISTANCES THAT YOUR TALKING I ALSO SHOOT A 6.5X47 LAPUA GREAT ROUND BUT THE 6MM'S WILL DO ANYTHING IT WILL DO AT THOSE DISTANCES

6br/Dasher or BRX. Little powder usage and very accurate. A 6br does just fine at 1k. I've shot a few 3" groups with mine and only had it out for 1 match.

Hard to argure with GG's success! Just sayin..... ;)

Love my sixes also, 3 .243 AI's and a 6X47L, but if more terminal energy and BC is needed for medium sized game at extended ranges the larger 6.5's get my vote.

Matt,

Like Hoier said 6BRX or 6Dasher, they run at 243 speeds and then some. Great accuracy great barrel like.

This is a new one. How can they run at the same speeds when their case capacity is much lower?

Here is some QL figures 243 30" barrel 42.1 g H4350 max pressure 60191 loaded 60128 psi 3088 fps Dasher with same barrel 37.2 H4350 64734 psi on 65000 psi max
3137 fps. It all amounts to the max pressure of the case. Larry
