6mm build: 6xc .243 6BR 6x47

I really like the 243win.

A no frills cartridge, and it can certainly shoot.

Pic of a 5-shot group from today's range trip.

330 yards
107smk
Win. Brass
210M
42.9gr H-4831
2.3" to ogive (2.845" I think)
2,942 fps agv.

This ain't no benchrest gun.
Savage 11 short action, Shilen 243w Pre-fit, MDT HS3 chassis, Bush. XRS glass, Timney trigger.

Yes, this was my best group of the day, my worst measured 1.74" at the same 330 yards.
Yeah, it rained a lil and was a warm humid day.

Barrel has around 1,200 rounds through it and I get the barrel stinking hot all the time. It's a bull 1" at the muzzle and is still slightly warm when I get home from the range, a 45 minute drive.

Just saying, the 243w is no modern nor efficient nor uber accurate cartridge, but it can shoot, it can be fast, and will do whatever you need it to do, within reason.
I like the looks of that and I like your using h4831 that's my fav powder. That's the exact load i had in mine. Good velocity

Jrod -

Howdy again !

I'm writing during break time @ work, so have sent info to you
in small amounts.

I wanted to mention that not only does " DEEP 6 " not require a custom chamber reamer to be made, it also does not require a custom " re-size " reamer to be for use in cutting any custom case forming or loading dies.

Another thing is:
IF one had a good 6mm Reminton varmint-wt barrel on a M-700 or 40X etc; the chamber could be shortened to DEEP 6 spec' by cutting the chamber to a .466" base diam.... and adding a few external threads to allow mating of barrel to the action.

The above mod to an existing 6mm Rem barrel might hold interest for a 6mm Rem shooter who now finds he can't get 6mm Rem brass.
Or... for a shooter that doesn't really need to use the entire case capacity that 6mm Rem features.

My current DEEP 6 is on a custom Broughton 29" SS 5"C"-rifled barrel. I'd like to find a godd 6mm Rem heavy barrel, and try my DEEP 6 mod idea on a M-700 platform .

With regards,

Lol no problem I'm
Actually thinking now just doing .243 it's more common
The 243 is a hell of a good round no doubt about it. I can't tell you exactly round count but of course runnin h-4350 which is very good for the caliber you can get good velocity, and usually accuracy but that powder will destroy the throat fairly fast compared to say h-1000 which is a great 243 powder to. And your throat area will last longer to. I personally have had better luck with h1k with several 243's I've messed around with. I don't think you will be disappointed with the caliber at all. But really think about twist rate for what bullet you want to shoot. If you have any desire to ever shoot the 105 hybrid you really should get a 7.5 twist. If you just want to shoot vldh or a-max get the 8 twist. Also if you decide you want to shoot a litter bullet say around a 90gr the 8 twist should work a touch better. Just my experience.

I've heard that about h1000 I'll keep that in mind. In pretty well set on 107 sierras for shooting. 8 twist should handle it correct

I've also had good results with Retumbo in the 243w under the 107smk's... Around 48gr was the sweet spot and got 3,030 fps in a 26" tube.

For some reason H-1000 didn't work as well for me as H-4831 and Retumbo.

Well I have to add my 2 cents. I've been a 6 caliber guy since way before it was cool. I have 6mm Rem,s and 243's, a couple 6mm AI's and a couple of the great little 6 XC. My most recent is the 6x47L and as was mentioned the 6X47L and 6XC are very close. Of all my little 6's I have to say I'm a 6XC convert. If you reload and like to play it's the way to go. If not go with the 243. I'm old enough to know the history of the 6mm Rem and the 243 win. That is a surprise to me how the 243's more popular than the 6mm Rem. I have both and the 6mm kicks the 243's butt day and day out. BUT, time shows a different opinion of many shooters. I have the same feeling about my 222 Rem Mag. Its always outshoots a 223 but has gone by the wayside as time goes by. Enjoy that little 6. It's a lot of fun and really and great caliber no mater what you shoot her in.

What about a 22 or a 24 inch barrel in a repeater action w/105's? What 6mm cartridge would be better? Velocity and flat trajectory is what I need the most.
