6mm/06 & loving it!!!

I hunt groundhogs in PA out to 1000 yrds with some friends.I recently upgraded from my Parker Hale 22-250 to an E R Shaw 6mm06 & absolutely love it!!!!! I wanted something to buck the wind better. Using SMK 95gr bullets acts like missiles on the hogs.I don't know if I'll ever go back to the 22-250 Lol. If anyone has a 6mm06 I would like to hear about it.

I've been looking at the 6mm-06 recently. There's not a whole lot out there about it, but the ballistics look impressive. Big selection of target and hunting bullets, inexpensive and easily available basic brass...

There was also a 6x57 Mauser, basically the usual 7/8mm necked down to 6mm. It would probably still be a big case for the 6mm bullet, but the 6mm-06 should still fit in a standard-length Mauser action.

Mr. 270 -

Howdy !

While I don't shoot a 6mm-06, I DO shoot a 6mm wildcat of my own design ( smaller case capacity ).

I gottat agree w/ you, about those 95Mks.
They did the trick for me on NE Indiana " Soybeanus Digestus ".
In my rifle/my loads, I prefer the 95MKs over 95gr Bergers.

If you decide to get a 6mm/06 I would definitely help you out with load development. I gathered all load data online then went to work on a load for my rifle.

I don't have a 6mm 06, but I do have a 6mm Ackley improved 40 degree shoulder.

It is about as wild as I want to get with the 6mm calibre ! I realize the barrel will be wasted around 500 rounds or so maybe, but it is darn fun, and pulverizes/explodes ghogs like you have never seen before.
I also shoot deer with it, but I only use Nosler Partition bullets, never lost a deer!

I never let the barrel get real hot, so far everything is fine, about 200 rounds down the tube.

I'm also very careful about not letting my barrel heat up. My load is on the mild side I would say but I prefer accuracy over speed myself. During load testing I was getting 1" groups at 100 yrds with avg speed of 3671. When I backed her down that's when the 1 ragged hole appeared.

I have been shooting a 243 Super Rock Chucker (four barrels) for a while, which is a 6mm-06. If you use Molly and something like H-450 ball powder, you can get around 1400 rounds through the barrel. They quit making H-450 recently. Very good and flat shooting round.
