6.5-06 or 280 AI

it's not really fair to compare new Nosler brass to anything once-fired.

My pocketbook and I made the decision to compare new Nosler and once fired 280 Rem brass... the once fired 280 Rem Brass was the clear winner at over $1 per case less. :)

Rem brass is still going strong at 8-9 firings, with great accuracy.

While Nosler *is* proud of their brass, it's not really fair to compare new Nosler brass to anything once-fired.

Yes but Nostler doesn't even manufacture their own brass. It's produced by Norma isn't it & I consider Norma's brass better than most if not all Nostler. Just my 2¢.

instead of all this small talk and worrying about the reloading dies, chances are you are having a real gunsmith set your barrel. why not have your gunsmith cut your dies at the same time? my smith charges me $25.00 to do this at the same time he does my barrel work. not sure what the big deal is, i have had my smith do over a dozen rifles for me, anything from the ackley improved to the gibbs stuff. the ownly thing i will tell you is after getting them back is to NOT shoot them thru your chrony, very disappointing to say the least. if you want something different, go for it, if you think its going to be a lot faster than what you have in a factory rifle, forget it. ive "improved" most of them from .223 to .30-06 and it was kind of disappointing after seeing the numbers on the chrony. and with the multitude of new powders some place you may just find what you are looking for.

Well lot information here .
2cents from my window.
.270 Winchester? All a Round Champion.
Much flatter shooter than .280 . Easy to Tune .
Shot lots of Deer and Elk at 450 plus ,

After almost 7 years the OP has probably made a decision and maybe even rebarrled a few times since, lol

Hi,

I'm new to this forum thing for posting. Anyway, I currently have a R-700 chambered in a 6.5-06 and the barrel is starting to go bad. (Shilen) I would estimate I have about 1200 rounds through the rifle. Copper fouling, flyers, and chasing the lands are a common theme with this gun. I'm looking to replace the barrel probably at the end of the year.

Should I stay with a 6.5-06 or bump up to a 280 AI? I use this gun for mainly shooting groundhogs, deer, crows, and other pests on the farms I hunt in PA. This is not a bench gun, but I'm looking to shoot it out to 800 yards occasionally. I intend to get a Brux Barrel on the next build. My biggest concern with the 6.5 is the poor barrel life which showed on this barrel. Could it possibly have been a bad barrel? It took me a lot of time to work-up a load for the 6.5-06. That's another reason I was thinking about going up to the 7mm for better barrel life, and easier load development. Also, Nosler has 280 AI brass for reloading instead of fire forming. Thanks for the input.

Chris
