6CM testing Results

RussT, I use N165 in my 7mm short magnum. N165 is only 3,500 KJ/KG! I'm hoping for 1,500+ rounds out of a short mag.

I believe what Donald and Steve are saying is that just because the powder is a slower burning powder... This does not make it easier on throats as most people asume... you know what they say about assumtions.

For example the HEAT OF EXPOSION/ POTENTIAL for H1000 is 3630 Kila Jouls/ KG ( HEAT)
While R25 is 3810 KJ/KG. Almost 200 KJ/KG less in H.O.E/P in the two powders yet they are real close in BURN RATE.

The biggest one in contrast I see is N560 Vs N160, that are within the same Manufacture even. N160 is a nice 3620 while the N560 High Energy powder is a wopping 4020!!!

Just because the powder of choice has a slow burn rate DOES NOT mean its easy on throats.

I hope i didnt mess this up.. If some one see's a mistake please jump in.

Interesting numbers, and i will plead ignorance but where do we find this chart or information that relates to HOE/P ? Might weed out powders that would be hard ( or harder ) on throats.

Most powders use graphite as a lubricant and static conductive additive. So, there is carbon added to the powder in addition to what is generated from burning. .22 Rimfire ammunition powder has a "lot" of graphite added but is a low pressure and temperature cartridge. Properly maintained, a rimfire barrel will last almost forever and seldom needs cleaning. It is really about heat. At sufficient temperature, steel burns quite well. [br]
The other problem with most double base powders is temperature sensitivity. It is much easier to maintain consistent velocity with single base powders.

No, it is not in an oily form when used in smokeless powder. It is added for more energy density, which is why double base powders can generally achieve more velocity at the same charge weight than single base powders. BTW, all "Ball" or spherical powders are double base.

Nitrocellulose is also an organic nitrate, cellulose nitrate. Neither nitrocellulose or nitroglycerin act a a lubricant when used in solid form. The purpose of adding graphite is to lubricate powder flow and serve as an electrical conductor for static, not to lubricate the bore. Although, the quantity present in rimfire ammunition may provide some bore lubricity. [br]
If you have an authoritative source that cites nitroglycerin as a lubricant in smokeless powder, I would like to see that.

Attached is the SAAMI description of smokeless powder. Nowhere does it mention lubricant properties or any oily characteristics. The links below provide some description of double base powders. Again, no mention of lubricant properties although the energy characteristics are described. [br]
To avoid a pointless exchange, you made the initial statement about lubricity and should be able to substantiate it. If not, who cares? I am leaving for Twentynine Palms and something about which I do care.

Your 6CM did well today in the switchy winds. And that Bighorn Action is dead sexy for sure.

Have 300rds on my Bighorn/Brux, 28"/7.8 twist. Chambered by Chad Dixon.

Fire-formed load, 47/H1000, BR2, 107SMK's. FF velocity 3040.

Worked up loads with Dtacs/.015 jump. 47-49 H1000, .5 increments. Going with 47.5, 10 shots, 3062fps, ES 17, SD 8.

Shot a steel match at Raton yesterday, posted my best score ;D Can't wait to shoot another match with it!

Up date on my 6mm cm. I have all my brass fireformed now and loaded 4 rounds 48 grains 4 48.5 and 4 49 grains. I shot these at 200 yards and you could cover the group with a nickel. I thought this was crazy, as there was a whole grain difference from the first four to the last four. Guess i load up 5 of each and shoot them at longer range to see witch one it likes better.

I have Kreiger and Bartlien barrels, the Bartlein is 5r and shoots great in my 6XC, under 1/4 min with the Berger 105's. I hav e a couple of the Bartlein 5R's and love them in my 6's. Don't
be afraid to use them, they are real hummers.

I use Lapua and Winchester.

Both work well.

At a lost brass match and hunting I will use Winchester.

I shoot an AI, Dave Burno did my barrel. Some Limey in England did the rest, and a good job I might add.

I just finished getting my 6CM ready to go, I need a source for dies. I thought I read somewhere that Hornady had them but they email me back and had no idea what I was talking about.
Thanks,

Dave Bruno may have a Redding Fl sizer.

Called Redding, they had them in stock. Redding won't sell direct. Called a Redding dealer who I've bought from before, they special ordered the Fl die for me. Took about 10 days. .271 bushing with WW brass.

Using a 243 seater.

Hey davidd,

a local Colorado gunsmith and fellow steel match shooter now has a 6CM die. I'm having another 6CM chambered at the end of the month. http://www.tjsgunsmithing.net/

Did some testing last night with 115 Dtacs and new closed tips all at 250 yards
All targets shot with 44.6gr of H4831sc with Kreiger 8 twist

I'm loving the Dtacs, gonna try H1000 tonight
Btw all bullets seated into lands and each group I changed the seating depth by .005 and it didn't matter.

Post later with H1000 results & 115's
