6BRX die survey

Just got my 1st 6BRX back 1/8 krieger 237 26" on Tac30 action. question is I know I can use my existing 6BR dies turned out .1 BUT was wondering what everyone else does/recommends? and 2- anybody not shootin their BRX anymore want to sell dies? any other BRX comments?

I started loading the BRX using BR dies. After several loadings you will somehow have to size the web area of the case as the BR dies wont do that as you will have problems chambering them.
Turned around and bought a Whidden BRX die set. Been smooth sailing ever since.
I would recommend buying a BRX die set from the start and not worry about having problems.

I suggest to send spent cases to a die maker, and get a die to match your chamber, and not just a generic fit.

Forget to add. My chamber on my BRX was cut with a PTG reamer and the Whidden dies size the case perfect.

I started shootingf a 6BRX in 2004. I Started out useing Wilson neck die reamed by my smith. When cases started getting tight in the butt. I hit the base with a 7mm-08 F/L die them bumped the shoulder with a 6br body die. then neck sized with the Wilson neck die. I shot 3 IBS 600yd benchrest records with this setup.

My smith had a F/L reamer made to match his chamber reamer. It cost me $200.00 in 2007, and did not do any better than my old setup. Whidden BRX die set would be the way to go.

Lonnie Hummel at Hornady made my BRX die. It sized cases with .0003" runout on average. I couldnt ask for a better die.

Extremely happy with my JGS BRX reamer based on Robert Whitley's specifications. Custom Redding dies available as well. I also have the 6XCII set up and it just works!
For those of us just smart enough to get into trouble I found this to be an excellent alternative. OP I realize that this is too late to help you, but, for anyone pondering a similar situation will (maybe) find this helpful.

Send a couple of fired unsized cases to Harrell's Precision. $75 including shipping for a great die. They will send your cases back and include a nice shoulder bump gauge.

Been shooting my BRX several years and have set a few National Records in mid-range F-Open with it. I've always used Redding 6BR dies and an old 308 FL die without the decapping stem to size the base of the brass. Guess you could us a 30/06, 243, 7/08, 260, ............

When I converted to 6BRX, I had been shooting 6SLR and 6BR. ( they have the same taper) So I use the 6SLR for the web area and the 6BR to bump shoulders and neck. If it gets sticky I have used 308 small base dies for the web and that works just fine as well.

It's a lot of extra work if you shoot the 6BRX regularly, but it works fine.

I started out with an expensive die set from some fellow that made them from, I think, RCBS dies. The fL die was a bushing die. and the bullet seater was a micrometer die.
I ended up with a custom LEE collet die set with some extra custom mandrels for seating pressure tune. I also use an inline die for seating now. I took the guts out of the sizing die to use it for a body die.
The custom LEE die set is a real bargain! send two fired cases and a bullet you will use and you get back a precision die set for very little money.

A lot of really good advise from previous posters here.
I just got my 6BRX chambered up yesterday and purchased a Whidden F/L sizer, and have a in-line seater made with the chamber reamer. I'm in the very early stages right now, but I'm reasonably sure everything is GTG.

Before I even load any new 6br brass I look at every single piece at the neck shoulder area. You can see very fine and very large creases in this area. I toss those to the side as those will be the ones that split on a guy. Since I started doing that 3 years ago my split cases when fireforming have gone to zero.
My fireforming load is:
New Lapua 6BR case
30gr Varget
Federal Regular 205 primer
107gr SMK
.005" neck tension
.020" in lands

I get blow lengths anywhere from 1.555-1.565 with the above combo. With a few falling into the 1.545-1.550 range.

I guess I'm the odd man out. I shoulder bump on a Forster 6BR bushing bump die and size the web when needed with a 308 die. It's been working great and I have plans to change anything.

I think the method used to fireform your cases depends to some degree on the action you are using. Mine is based on a Remington action so there is the ejector to consider. Spring tension will push the ejector against the base of the case. You can jam a bullet but you must have enough neck tension to overcome the force of the ejector spring and keep the case head against the bolt face. One could remove the ejector spring and use the jam method. I use the false shoulder method. Neck the 6BR case neck up (some go to .257 or .264) then start sizing the neck down (maybe 1/2 or so) until you can close the bolt with just a little resistance.


As for a fireforming load I use CCI-450 primers and 30 grs of Varget pushing either a 107 SMK or a Berger 105 VLD. In my rifle it's a very accurate load, blows the case out very nicely and is very competitive in 600 yd F class matches.

I take the ejector out and jam about .050". 30.5 Varget with a 107SMK and they fire form great. And yep the fire form loads are amazingly competitive!

I use a BRX FL Redding Type S die (with bushings) that my smith sold me when I started with the BRX. Not sure where/when he got it. I use a Wilson 6BR bullet seater that he reamed out using the same reamer as my barrels.
