6brx vs 6dasher?

case life is longer with the Dasher's 40 degree shoulder.
You can get 10 to 15 firings before the case needs trimming.

Well I have thought long and hard about it, even lost a cpl hours sleep over it. So being that all my brain storming has become a big headache. I have decided that I am trying to talk myself out of a 6brx, and into a 6-dasher. Sooooo! 6brx IT IS!!

Now on to the next headache lol. Reamer Spec's? What are you 6brx guy's using as far as Chamber length and Free bore? One gentleman on this thread did say he was using a 1.570 chamber length. Witch sounds logical to me. I also use the 1.570 chamber length in my 6br. Keeping my brass trimmed to 1.560.

I will be shooting the 105gr. bergers. What was your starting free bore, and where was the bearing surface at in your neck? Approxmently how far were you from the shoulder/neck Junction when the chamber was new?

Also with the new neck wall thickness of Lapua going from .013 to .012, I'm thinking of going with a .270 neck. This giving me the same results as the .272 no turn neck? If the .270 neck is a little tight then I could just do a light clean up on the necks and be good to go. Right??
Thanks
Mark

Dave Kiff, told me that word was Lapua was going back to the .013" after the first run blue box. I do not know his sources, so take this with a grain of salt.

Of course! Now that I sent off a barrel to have a Dasher with a .268" fitted neck chamber cut and 300 pcs of the new stuff! Oh well, I am interested to see if it will shoot any differently than my .272 no-turns.

That is very interesting!! Knowing that Dave Kiff makes most of his reamers based on lapua's case dimensions, I'd say he probably has a pretty good reliable source!
Mark

PS. Thanks for the extra headache!! LMAO ;D

Dave told me the same thing about the .013 neck thickness but i'm not going to wait and see. I'm going with a .266 neck, that way it doesn't matter..........jim

ok, ok, Not to be a D*** or A******, the lapua neck wall thickness is interesting and needs to be discussed for sure! How ever just to leave a reminder, I still want to hear about free bore and chamber length with the 6brx. I definitely want to hear opinion's on experenice with the new neck wall thickness etc, but If any can also give info on free bore and chamber length it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks A Million
Mark

I had Kiff make my 2nd reamer with .140" freebore, and was a bit apprehensive as to its merits till I sent the reamer to Jim Borden and asked him to make me a throat/headspace gauge from some barrel drop. The .140" is about perfect to me for the 95 Sierra through 105 Berger Match boatail. The Sierra 107 sits tight into the neck shoulder, thus my last BRX and its .170" freebore to shoot the longer bearing surface style bullets. I played with that gauge for at least an hour last night. Maybe this might shed some light. Several folks that have had Kiff grind them a 6BRX have had really bad luck with Dave using very outdated Remington case length. He did this to me and am still pissed at such a manuver. I had to trim Lapua brass .015" before the bolt would close on a Lapua headstamp 6BR case. What was he thinking? He defended himself as that being the original Bob Crone design. Be fore warned. I chose the 1.570" You can go shorter but I would not go below 1.565. Rodney Wagner aka eggman, is very talented shooter that knows the 6BRX like the back of his hand, and his latest BRX reamer has .160" freebore, and told me it was working out very well. This weighed heavily on my last reamer dimensions. Also the current lots of 105 VLD`s suck. A guy has to make adjustments. My bullet money is getting spread out instead of going to Kalifornia. Spencer, Knight, CR, Sierra all are seeing more income as of late.

I went with a .150 free bore in the Dasher reamer, i also went with a chamber length of 1.60 for the short brass Lapua has been making. I shoot the 115 DTAC over the 105's because they shoot better in the 7.8 twist. ES. is in mid to low single digits SD. has been as low as zero, and at 1K vertical is gone.
The .150 free bore will move the heel of the bullet out of the shoulder neck area and it will still work with the 105,107, and the 108's......jim

Johara1,
When you say the heel of the bullet do you mean the bottom of the BT or The bearing surface? I'm really only trying to get the bearing surface above the shoulder/neck junction. Also I want the bearing surface just above the shoulder/neck junction. This allowing me to get the most out of my barrel by having to chase the lands as erosion accurs, and not running out of neck before I get all the good out of my barrel. I'm going to do two barrels chamber by the same reamer. Witch ever shows the most consistent promise will be pulled and used for comp only. The other will be used for fire forming, varmints, and just shooting for the heck of it.
Thanks
Mark

Thanks for the info. I think that 1.570 will work good for chamber length. I use this length with my 6br reamer. Works out great for the 6br, I'm thinking it should do fine for the 6brx also. I will be shooting the 105gr. hunting match vlds. They have the highest BC of the berger 105 bullets. So I'll make a note on the .140 free bore.
Thanks
Mark

The heel is the rear of the bearing surface, the .136 free bore i use now it's in the shoulder neck area even the 108's This is why i moved up to the .150 free bore.
Most of the brass is in the 1.555 or less area so i made the reamer a little shorter 1.560. Forming dasher brass to blow out to 1.550 or more is very hard and the loss rate isn't worth it......jim

Ask your smith....some smiths have a bunch of experiance with one or the other. He may have a few "tricks" up his sleeve with one or the other. I have seen both shoot great. I personaly own a dasher with one on the way.

Good luck and keep us informed!!

GREAT discussion everybody! i'm considering a 6BRX for varmint hunting(ghogs) shooting bullets weighing 62-80 grains. i have a 6BR and reddicg dies. kreiger is my barrel choice. speed is important since wind is a problem. questions from those who have been there...whatis the best twist for these bullet weights, how much freebore, a no turn neck would be my guess. thanks.
if i can see you, i can touch you.BANG!
