i have had three 13.5 - 14 twist 6BR barrels. a Bartlein, a Krieger, and a Shilen. none of them have held a candle to my 12 twist Brux shooting 80 gr Bergers using N135. it also shoots the 68 gr class of bullets very well. these three slower twist barrels have shot some excellent groups, but can't agg the way the 12 twist Brux does.

i have used 68 gr Bart's Ultras, original 68 gr Barts, Euber 68's, Berger 68's and Berger Columns in these three barrels.. no clear winner

i have another 12 twist Brux blank awaiting to be chambered. i may never go back to the slower twist barrels for the 6BR

i have been using 23 inch barrel lengths

That's what I'm looking for. I'm just a plinker but a real serious one.
Do you like a Boattail or flatbased bullet for that range?
Will go with the Bart's, but which one?

A 21" or 23" Lilja 3-groove with a 1-14" twist rate.

With Sierra's 60 gr. H.P., you should never see and paper between the holes at 100 or 200 yards. If you need to go heavier, Speer's 75 gr. H.P. is also wonderfully accurate from a 6mm Bench Rest.

Last year I built a zero freebore 6 BR Improved with a 23” Bartlein 12 Twist. It shoots Bart’s 68 grain flat base and 80 Dominator Boat Tails very well. It also shoots 55 and 70 grain Sierra Blitzkings almost as well. Like you I don’t compete, but it sure is fun poking small holes in a target.

Dropped off my brand new reamer at the smith yesterday. 50 freebore 6bra. 12 twist Brux HV. :)

80's in a 13.5/14,,,,, just not right.

if you truly shoot 100-300, then no reason to go real heavy.
maybe 75 or so, and then pick a twist.
but 13-14 with 65-68 rules 100/200, and plenty shot at 300 also.

Also, what barrel contour?
Do you stay with the heavy varmint and like?
Freebore? I see Alot of you are going with zero to .035

so you are shooting in the 1's with 80's...???
sorry your jump from twist and bullet weight is a poor comparison.

here you go all 80 Bergers @ 100yds, five shot groups

Brux is on a Savage Target Action with the red Accutrigger. 1st photo, the barreled action was in a XLR Industries chassis. the 2nd photo (same action and barrel), it's in a $200 Choate Tactical stock. I shoot using a SEB Joy Pod and Pod Pad off the bench.

nope , haven't been able to get any of the three 13/14 twists to come close to agging that. the barrels have been on blue printed Remington 700 actions in custom glass and pillar bedded stocks. all the barrels involved, including the 12 twist Brux are custom smithed by a great gunsmith. i even dropped the Shilen barreled action into a Choate Tactical stock to see if i had a stock issue. no change

If it was my gun I’d say a 13 twist isn’t fast enough with 80gr type bullets. I’d run at least a 12 twist.

Also with the short jacket type bullets in 6mm I wouldn’t use the 5R type rifling. Go conventional type rifling. 4 groove, 5 groove, 6 groove etc...

Also define your accuracy requirement.

Even the 68gr bullets. Guys do shoot them thru 14 twist barrels but the last time I did a twist rate calc’s on some of them at PPC velocities I was getting around a 13.78 twist min. So in a 14 twist barrel they might fly good and might not. I myself wouldn’t run a 14 twist barrel. I’d go 13.5 at a minimum to be safe.

Where you do you live/shoot? Altitude, conditions also play a part and can effect bullet flight as well as velocity do play into the equation as well.

Frank i may not have been clear in my posts. i shoot the 80 gr bullets in a 12 twist barrel only. the Berger Columns and the other 68 gr bullets have been shot in a 14 twist Bartlein, a 14 twist Shilen, and a 13.5 twist Krieger. the pics i posted were from a 12 twist Brux with 80 gr Bergers

none of the barrels i listed are 5R's, including yours. as for accuracy expectations, i would have thought the 68 gr class of bullets in a 13.5 or 14 twist barrel would be as good as i am getting from that 12 twist Brux with 80 gr bullets which can agg in the high ones or low twos. i certainly would expect a five group agg in the mid twos fairly often, accounting for wind. i ain't getting that with any of these barrels. nor am i getting day after day consistentency with loads that have shot well previously. i live in SE Florida, with minimal extremes of temps and humidities, season to season. i also keep track of temps and humidities for each session.

this pic is an example of what i am talking about. this is the 13.5 twist Krieger in the blueprinted remington 700 action shooting Berger Columns, which have shot as was well or better than the Eubers and Barts i have shot. this is all 31.3 grs of N135 ,which has been one of my best loads in all three barrels. this Krieger had only about 300 rds through it when this was shot. i also keep track of the cleaning state of the barrel, having experimented with different states of cleaning (type of cleaning and number of rounds shot through the barrel prior to a session).

also, a pic of the rifle involved
