Ideal bullet weights for 6BR 1:8' and 1:10'?

Hi all. New poster and about to order my first 6BR barrel for my Savage guns. I will be getting this probably in 22" length since I will usually shoot this with a suppressor. Purpose for this gun is non-competitive target,300 to 500 yards is what I normally shoot) and varmint shooting.

I also reload my 223, 204 and 308 rounds currently so would be reloading my 6BR of course.

I am trying to decide between 1:8" and 1:10" twist.

What is the typical ideal range of bullet weights that can be used with these two twists? My only concern about the 1:8" twist is not being able to shoot lighter-weight, flat-shooting bullets.

Thanks,

John

Hey John, welcome to 6br.

If you just plan to shoot to 500yrds and varmints you should be OK with a 1:10, you can shoot bullets up to 90grs with one and use the 87v-max for long shots on varmints. Unless you want to shoot high bc bullets over 100grns you don`t need a 1:8. If you got a 1:12 you`ll get stuck shottin pills under 80grs. I think 1:10 is the best for a med. range "bug" gun, I use one to shoot p-dogs +500yrds with 31.8grsH4895 & 87v-max cci450 primers. I don`t like to use match bullets for varmits...

John, a 1:8 twist will shoot the lighter bullets just fine, though you may give up a tiny bit of accuracy. But my 1:8" PacNor will shoot Berger 70s under .2" for five shots.

I agree 1:10 is nice--that'll let you shoot the 90gr boat-tails if you like.

Keep in mind that 300m is a very, very competitive discipline in Europe. 90+% of those guys are shooting 105gr class bullets. So, in real world shooting, the longer bullets have the edge. So, I'd say if your bias is 70/30 paper vs critters, go 1:8. If it's 70/30 Varmint vs. paper, go with a 1:10.
