6BR build has begun

Long time lurker and first time poster.

A while back I bought a new 700 action, and was deciding between a 6.5 CM or a 6BR. Went with the latter. Then yesterday bought 200 Lapua brass, Redding dies. My order is in with PTG for a .272 reamer.

Looking to shoot 95gr Bergers, maybe 95gr Sierras, and also experiment with the 105, 107's a bit.

I have an R5 chassis, which houses my 6XC which is going to move to a Bobby Hart stock.

My Gunsmith in Bloemfontein is now looking for a 1:8 SS barrel for me. We don't have a lot of choice available to us.

I think I am set. Anything else I should be looking at?

Merry Xmas y'all!

Merry Christmas I see Dave doing the reamer. How long had Ben ordered if not long.the .272 reamer was perfect for no turn neck old brown box the new blue box takes .2705 not that it wont work fine. Ask Dave he the best. Good Shooting Larry

Definitly change the reamer neck dimension to .2704 that is my ptg reamers dimension. The other thing to speed up things is the savageguy on here and a fella just posted a bartlein 1in8 6mm barrel just a few minute's ago.

The Berger 95 has very little bearing surface making it hard to get a free bore for the 95 and 105 VLD'S that works well for both. My reamer has .080 freebore and is about rlght for both. Not perfect, but a good compromise. Good luck. :)

Paul

Yes, my Savage has a .080 or so Freebore and we can shoot the 105s just fine and the Berger 95s about .012 in the lands, but that doesn't leave much bearing surface in neck. Still they shot great -- very accurate even hanging way out there. I think you'd have to jump the 95s if you had a .115 freebore.

Ditto on a .2704" no-turn neck. .272 is going to be a bit roomy with Lapua brass. Freebore for Dave's "World Record" Dasher reamer is .104" , I'm sure he has a recommendation for the BR using 90s and 95s. If you try 105s, it starts and ends with the Hybrid.

One recommendation? Send your bolt to Greg Tannel and have him bush the firing pin hole and sleeve the pin. Match it with his firing pin assembly and you'll never have primer flow/cratering and very consistent ignition.

Just wanted to know if a .271" reamer would also be too big for a no neck turn chamber? My gunsmith only has that one or then it would be a turned neck chamber. I don't have an issue turning brass...just didn't want this gun to be one. I'm having a barrel done soon as well. What is the optimum freebore for shooting 87 gr to 105 gr bullets?
Thanx again,
Rmist

Thanks all for the input. Unfortunately I am in South Africa so purchasing/sending barrels, bolts etc is not an option. I am going to contact PTG wrt the neck dimension to see if they can change it and the freebore.

Hope y'all have a happy new year!

Cheers,

Pete

Pete , I have one on the shelf . My email here at the custom shop is dave@kifftool.com Or call me at 541-826-5808 I am here 10 to 12 hours a day so the time difference should not be a problem. Thanks Dave

Hi Dave, I ordered a .272 with freebore to suit a 95 gr Berger. Sheila Wise confirmed. Do you recommend the .2704?

I do for blue box . I have folks that still order .272 necks for the older lapua and Norma that they have. Thanks Dave

Ok please size it for the blue box stuff, as that is what I have. Seems the neck thickness is 0.013". By my reckoning 0.026 + 0.243 = 0.269. That sound about right?
