6br.....1:14 twist barrel.......anybody running this setup?

I'm gonna be chambering a rem 700 short action this summer. It's gonna be in 6br with a 1:14 twist barrel. Just trying to get some advice on bullets. I have shot v-max bullets out of my 223 before and really liked them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bob

I have a 20 inch 6br .262 necked 14 twist on a XP-100 that absolutely loves shooting the 66 grain Fowlers with Remington 7 1/2 primers and good old reliable H-322....
I've won a ton of Groundhog contests with that one...
Inside of 200 yards you can pick and choose the eye you want to poke out... any further out and you need to use the whole head ;D

Thanks Preacher......yeah i plan on using it as a varmint gun and also i'm going to try my hand at the sporting rifle matches down at the whittington center. I'm excited about building this up for the summer. My teacher Speedy Gonzalez is gonna help me chamber it. It should be a sweet shooting rig! I actually just found some different loads to try that were on 6mmbr.com, so i will have to do a little experimenting.

Good to hear of a new gunsmith in the making....you will be very happy with the 14 twist BR....it will shoot any good "botique" bullet made by the many premium bullet manufactures out there....and...if Speedy is involved he will give you many yrs of Benchrest experience....tell him HI...Roger

Mine's a 14twist Hart and it's real effective on varmints with 55-65gr bullets. Very accurate with RE7 and a 55@3780. The absolute best accuracy/velocity so far is with AA2230 powder......loads are 55@3919........58@3855-3923......65VMax@3710 ..... 65custom@3675 - 3696. This cartridge easily replaces the 22-250. Shoots 55's and 65's faster than a 22-250 shooting the same weight .22, and does it with quite a bit less powder. The 55Bal tip has a BC of .276 which is the same as a 55gr/22cal bullet. Barrel is 24" long on a Sako action.

The 6BR case has a very long neck. For your purposes I'd suggest NO freebore.

Yes i have a 6br 1-14 twist,24" tube, my favorite custom bullet is the 66gr fowler also. my favorite varmit bullet is the 65gr v-max. i load the lapua case, cci 450 primer,RL 10x powder, muzzle velocity of 3,515 shoots bug holes.I load 30.5grs of the RL10x powder,But i caution you if you were to try it you should back off to the starting load and work up because of tight chambers and match barrels,But i have no dought if you were to try the RL10 you would find your best groups and velocity.

Well i never shot AA2230, shotAA2015 and 2460 but never AA2230.Thats some smoken hot velocity's.AA2460 gave me the best velocitys with the 65gr ers say around 3,650fps but groups were poor .500 to .750s yea good enough to shoot groundhogs but all my testing led me to RL 10 with a 65gr er at 3,515 and groups lets say sub 1/4moa at 100yds and have been shooting that load since i bought that first can of RL 10 some years ago.and in the field or at the range its been great.

I have expipers xp-100 with a hart 14 twist lv tube on it and I use the wonderful 68 grain arnette bullets over h-322 and shoot basically 1 hole groups out to 100 and .250 at 200 all day. You will ove it but you will have to shoot bullets 80 grains or less. You will have a riot and the woodchucks will probably start a lawsuit with the aclu,LOL Tell Roger I said hi.

Hi Jon.....yes...tell em all about it....you have a great rig there...most of them will shoot the Berger 80's just as good as the 62-68 gr "botique" bullets.....but the Fowler and Sierra wont stabalize ...they are just a lil' bit toooo long for a 14 twist...but ooooo the Bergers...Roger
PS ..the twin to your gun except Urban Camo (blue/black/grey) is bak and for sale...the guy didnt have the $$....these are tufff times...

I have several 14 twist 6 BR barrels that shoot great. Currently one of my favorite bullets is Bart's 68 gr Ultra using IMR 8208 XBR. This bullet/powder combo seems to shoot great in several of my barrels. Good luck

Don't laugh, but one of my best, most accurate, and explosive lightweight bullets for my 14 twist's is the Hornady 58 gr. V-Max, in front of a healthy charge of N133. H322 another powder choice for the lightweights. The heaviest I've ever used in the 14 twist's is the 70 gr. Sierra #1507 BlitzKing. The 58 V-Max is also excellent in my 6ppc's.

Frank, last weekend I tried the 65 grain V-Max bullets and there were just okay. Nosler and Sierra 70 grain varmint bullets both shoot better. How do the 58 grain V-Max compare to the 65 grain V-Max in your guns?

I've now tried a number of powders (N133, N135, H322, Varget) and charges with the Berger 68 grain bullets, seated at the lands. Won't group worth a darn, yet the 70 grain Sierra MatchKings group in the .2s and .3s with little effort on my part. I don't want to give up on the Bergers yet. Any suggestions? Jump them? Jam? Give up and just shoot the MatchKings?

I've also never gotten anything special with the 65 V-Max, just so-so: the 58 V-Max easily outshoot the 65's. Got turned onto the 58's from an article in Precision Shooting magazine about 10 yrs. ago, and find them to be excellent for group sizes and also very effective on g'hogs. I use a lot of the 68 gr. Berger's in my 6ppc's (2 chamberings) and all of my 6BR's ( 5 chamberings). The standard load is 30 grs. of N133 with the 205 & 205M (never could tell the difference betwen them), and they get seated to touch. The 70 gr. Sierra H.P. #1505 MatchKing's have a slight accuracy advantage over the #1507's, in all my twist's/ 14, 9.25 & 8. If you're using neck bushing dies, try one size smaller than what you're using now for a little more bullet pull. Sometimes that has helped tighten the group's with a bullet that is not grouping as it should.

Have you tried the Sierra and/or Nosler 55 grain varmint bullets, and if so, how did they do compared to the 70 grain version and the 58 V-Max?

I have the next size down bushing so I will try that with the Berger 68s. I will also try it with the MatchKings too and see what that does to them. Thanks for the info Frank.

Never did much with any Nosler bullet and the only BlitzKing choice has been the #1507, so really can't say. In addition to putting a heavier pull on the bullet(s) with the smaller bushing, you might also run the loads across a chronograph and see what kind of spreads you're getting. Are the groups in a definate pattern w/ vertical or horizontal? There was also some talk here, or thereabouts about the land diameter, either a .236" or .237" with some barrels. One dia. supposed to be better suited to lightweight bullets & the other the heavyweights. The question was asked why Krieger offers both diameters. Don't know what barrel you're using, but have to wonder if other barrel makers are also using these two different land diameters. Just some random thoughts, without any basis what-so-ever.

have to agree on the 58 vmax, they work! using them to fireform 6/30-30 ai in wickcliffe s s because of price, but they do so good, that's the load i'm staying with. a friend with 6 tcu shot a lot of pd's w/55 nos. bt's @ 3500+, better bc than 55 grainers in 22 cal., plus higher vel. go figure. (have no idea on underlining) tom.

This is all good stuff,Have shot all the bullets in both of my 6br 1-14 twists, one was retired and sold to a varmit hunter who is vey happy with it.All the bullets shot well in my guns. shot over 500 berger 70 gr MEF's,all shot well a lot of groups in the low .2's.shot 70gr biltzkings never set the world on fire(but shot well) did not like they were inconsistant and could not get the veloicty out of them in my gun.I have has trouble getting good veloicitys with my 6brs tight chambers(tight necks).tight barrels i guess?. say 28.5grs H322 with a 70gr was max load at 3,200fps.So chose the 65gr v-max cause i got 3,530fps with them and they shoot flat, hit hard. The load is laupa case(my cases are matched)cci 450 primer. 30.5grs RL10x 65gr v-max .010 off touching. veloicty is 3,530fps groups are say .250ish to .450 at worst(very rare to have one step out to over .4 but it can happen) Im going to the range and shoot some fresh targets and i will post them and this load(it has been so consistant over five years) and the same load with some good fowler bullets shoots, have targets in low ones to low two"s EVERY TIME THE GUN IS FIRED in good conditions! And this load has shot in both of my brs and i have a friend who has a 14twister and after i smoked him at the range the other day he agreed to try my load in his gun if i supply the powder and bullets(witch i have agreed to do)I want to know if his br will shoot it as well as mine have. What im trying to say is i think im on to something here. I will let everyone know how it all goes.Dont get me wrong guys i have about 20 differant cans of powder(tryed most of em)They all have shot well.

I have a 6br 1/14 .263 nk Shilen, 22 inches on a Remington 700 action. I find this really interesting; this Rifle likes 65 Vmax with 31.5 of VV135, 58 Vmax with 29.6 of VV133 and 55 BK with 32.0 of H4895. You would think a barrel with bullets this close in weight would like one powder best, but it does not! Go figure.

55g Nosler and 70g Blitz kiings loaded with AA2230......

should be on the top of your list to try, fastest velocity with extreme accuracy.

Use a thick cup primer such as a 7 1/2 or CCIbr-4. These loads will smoke a 22/250 in velocity and speed!

I am getting over 3900 with AA2230 and it smokes the 70g load at 3550 at 300 yards in as far as wind drift and bullet drop.

It amazed me how 300 fps faster 55g bullet smoked the 70g in as far as bullet drop and groups(3/4") at 300 yards. The BC on the 55g Noslers is better than the other bullets of this weight.

Yes; that is a great combination. I have a 1 in 14" Hart, .265 nd, 24" long barrel. Several pet loads are 65 grn. Hornady V-Max, CCI 450 sm. rifle primer with a brisk load of Varget. This shoots bugholes and is deadly on critters. Another combo. is 68 grn. Fowler or Hammonds, N135 powder ignited with Federal small rifle primers. This barrel and twist is ideal for bullets of those weights.
