6 Dasher or 6x47Laupa

I have shot 5" 10 shot groups at 1000. Dont do it every time im sorry to say but the 6x47 has done very well at Williamsport. A 6x47 won the world open a few years back as i recall. You will not be lacking for accuracy.

RMiller,

I will give it a try, If you don't mind what kind of glass are you shooting.

Thanks

Nightforce NXS 12-42x56 is the scope thats on my light gun at the moment.
My heavy gun has a Leupold VX-III 8.5-25x50.

I like them both but for different reasons.

RMiller,

thanks, i will need a scope pretty soon. Been looking at the NF also at the sightrons.

Thanks,

I want to use the gun for mostly target shooting, mabe a match or 2. Just don't want to spend all my time preping brass. From the other post it should shoot well. The dasher would be fine but it has a .264 neck (smith said ) I like the idea of a no turn neck seem like less hassel and more time shooting. I have read about guys having good luck with no turn necks. Just my 2 cents worth.

Don't forget about the 6BR!

You said you're going to be doing target shooting mainly, and occasional matches. If it was me, I'd have a hard time NOT doing the 6BR. I have 2 6BR's and a 6mm Dasher. I love my Dasher, don't get me wrong, but the 6BR is so damn accurate from 50 yds to 1000 yds, it's hard to argue with! My 1K bench rig is a standard 6br with a .272 neck. You're ability to read wind will outweigh the cartridge choice... keep that in mind.

I think both of your choices will suit you well... don't let me talk you out of either of them. Just throwin' my $.02 in here :)

Most of my shooting will be at 200yds ( home range), But would like to go to a 600yd or 1000yd match, I had a BR but i had trouble with it not throwing the empty cases out, So that is why i want a longer case ex 6x47L.

I had the 6x47L reamer made before i read alot about the dasher.

it was in a plane jan rem short action, could have been the problem :'(

I have a Stiller Tac action this time, Just can't make up my mind what to chamber :-\

Had the 6x47L reamer made but don't know now

not trying to stray off-topic, but I have a Hart action on one of my 6Br's and it ejects fine - every time. It is a 700 clone, coned bolt, with sako extractor.

My other 6Br is a Rem 722, which is basically the 700, and that also has a sako extractor. It ejects every time as well.

T 700 - the shooting that you wish to do is perfectly aligned with a standard 6mmBR, especially considering your primarily shooting at 200 and occasionally going out to 600 and 1000. That situation has 6BR written all over it! Again, I think you'll be happy with a Dasher or a 6x47L, and don't let my 6BR talk discourage you from your two choices. Choosing a cartridge is like selecting the color of paint to spray your car.... the more you think about it, the more daunting it gets :)

Thanks woolenmammoth,

Just watched the video, That was my problem!!! Thanks for the link.

queen_stick you are right picking a cartridge will run you insane, I am halfway there!!!!

I will talk to my smith and see what he thinks. Thanks for the info.

On top of that just shot a 8 pointer this even and could not find him, will look again tomorrow, Hope i find him, Biggest one i ever shot with muzzelloader.

If you are building the rifle to shoot mostly at 200 (i built my 6br to shoot at my home range's max of 300) I would seriously consider another 6br. Such an easy cartridge to load for and shoot its almost silly. Im sure in the right hands there is probably some difference but I would bet for alot of us, considering all rifles built to the same degree of excellence, at 200 yards, there's probably not alot of practical difference between a 6br, dasher, or 6x47. I think where you start to see the big difference is longer range at whatever transitional point from where the power peters out and the bc takes over... My 6br is a 10 twist, its perfect for 90's and at 300 is capable of accuracy that impresses me every time I go out with it.

It's pretty hard to imagine seeing much difference between a dasher and a 6br at 200. What do you guys who have experience with both think?

woolenmammoth,

You are right, It is hard to beat the 6br at that range. I would also like to hear from someone that has shot all three. 6br, 6Dasher, 6x47L

I wouldn't let the fireforming issue with a dasher slow you down. I have only used the false shoulder method to make the brass, but I have talked to several top shooters that just use a couple of thousandth smaller bushing to up the neck tension. This allows them to just load a bullet long and jam it in the lands and shoot. This of course is with a no turn neck. I wouldn't trade my dasher for anything inside 600 yards (unless shooting in a hurricane). A benchrest shooter that I have had several conversations with has been around both the 6x47L and a dasher, he shoots a dasher. The fireforming loads are just as accurate as the full power loads just about 100 fps slower. I use 108 bergers to fireform and for full power. The 6br is very accurate also, but it seems to give up a little bit to a dasher at 500+ yds. My f class rifle will shoot easy half minute groups out to 1k (have to watch the conditions at that range pretty close). BTW just set a 500 f class record with my dasher.

I have shot all 3 cartridges at 1K yards. I don't own the 6x47L, but shot one that belongs to a fellow shooter at Williamsport. In guns that weigh the same (17lbs), the 6x47L has considerable recoil compared to the 6BR, and its recoil is noticeably heavier than the Dasher. I've only shot the 6x47L at 1K... never shot it at any other distance. At 1K, all 3 are very capable rounds, but the 6BR loses out to the Dahser and 6x47L with a even a slight wind change. If you call the wind correctly, the 6BR can beat the Dasher and 6x47L... I've done it, and have seen others do it.

I own two 6BR's and a Dasher. One of my BR's is a 1K Bench gun, and the other is ground hog gun. My Dasher is a ground hog gun as well. I'll leave the bench gun out of the discussion, because I shoot it from a front and rear rest. Now, the Dasher vs the 6BR (ground hog gun) - I shoot both off a bipod. Both are very accurate, but the 6BR out-shoots the dasher almost every range trip. However, I've seen Dashers out-shoot a 6BR many times. At 100yds, both of them have shot groups in 1's when I do my part. Groups in 2's happen all of the time, and it's rare that shoot a group over .5" (this is with a bipod, and a rear bag... I'm not that good off a bipod alone!) I think the primary accuracy variable between cartridges is the barrel. If you get a good 6mm 8-twist barrel, either cartridge will surprise you with accuracy capabilities, at all ranges.

If you like playing around with stuff - go with a dasher, because you have to fire-form. If you want to load-and-shoot, go with the 6BR. If you want 7-10gr more capacity to get the heavy 6mm bullets moving a little quicker, go with the 6x47L. If you want to go with the round that's the cheapest to load, go with the 6BR.

Hopefully this info can help you make a decision!

Now all i have to do is make up my mind :-\

Where can one get a dasher reamer?

What about dies, If i go that way?

PT&G would be a good choice on the reamer. Then for dies it depends on you choice of manf. Sometimes sinclair has the redding FL type S in stock, and another choice is Mark King Rifles he carries them too. For a seater you can get a redding competition 6mm BR and have the smith ream it out, or buy the forester, and for inline's wilson makes one also.
