6 Dasher or 6x47Laupa

I know this is not a new question, i have a 6mm barrel laying around and i can't decide witch one to go with. I would like to use it for a few matches, and paper punching, Maybe take it hunting once in a awhile. Alot of you like and shoot the dasher but i see some talking about the 6x47Laupa. What advantage or disadvantage do you have with them. Is one more accurate than the other :-\

Thanks T 700

In 6mm I would go with the Dasher for long range work. I would choose the 6.5 X 47 in order to shoot heavier bullets. Either one is capable of winning. Good shooting...James

I was leaning that way, My smith has the dasher reamer but it has a .264 neck, don't know if i want to get into turning necks. have you turned necks?

700, I have a tight neck dasher and it did have a decent amount of case work in the beginning. Turning the necks was not too bad, the neck length on the dasher is approx. .243 and turned the necks .260 down, just to help with any impending doughnuts (not sure if that really helps, the smith said to and I've not had any problems so far).

I set my turning mandrel up using other junk 6mm brass I had laying around so I wasn't trying it out on new lapua, and it worked fine when I switched to my lapua brass. With a .264 neck you would want your neck wall thickness to be around .0095, and I lost 4 cases during fireforming to split/cracked necks

Edit: also I really love my dasher, I've never owned a 6 x 47 but the dasher has been a real blast. I personally am not considering another cartridge when I eat up this barrel. It shoots great from 100 - 1000 yards (plus a world record @ 1000 yards)

The BRX still has the 30 degree shoulder while the dasher blows that out to 40 degrees. Not sure if on the neck lengths, but the have to be pretty close to the same (around .243)

My Dasher requires turning. It is a .269 neck and I turn it with one pass. The Dasher is capable of 3000 fps with a 105 Berger VLD and it has the accuracy of its parent case the 6 BR. James

Adding to the above two post: A dasher will have a little more neck space compared to a brx!

Thanks for the reply, the .264 neck, that is pretty tight. How many passes would that take to get there? How much can you take off in a pass? If i do the dasher, would i be better off with a no turn neck? been hearing a lot of guys that shoot them and they shoot good( Like the 6BR and others) I had a 6 br with a .272 neck and it shoot in the 2's ( .203 ) is my best 5 shot group. What do you gain with a turned neck vs a no turn neck??? What neck turner to get :-\

From a Williamsport long-range title winner:

"I weight-sort the brass, but do not turn necks. Basically the only thing I do to my 6BR cases (after weight segregation) is to chamfer the necks inside and out."

the upside to the 6x47 lapua is speed. i get 3650 fps using a 80 gr fowler, rel 17 in a 12 twist kreiger. it is a little pickey when tuning a load, but once you find it , it shoots. for long range, speed gets you there before the wind blows you off. the dasher ,like the brx is very easy to tune . of course with the dasher, new dies are needed due to the 40 deg shoulder. 6 br dies push the shoulder back on my 6x47 l. i did buy a forster micrometer bullet seater for the 6x47 and bullet runout is gone. barrel life is probably longer withe the dasher. so many choices and so little time.

I have shot both the 6MM Dasher and the 6x47 Lapua in competition and as far as accuracy goes, there is no reason to go thru all the trouble of brass prep the Dasher requires. The 6x47 is a very easy round to load for. Requires 1 trip thru a 6x47L FL Die and is every bit as capable of producing accurate results. Keep it Simple!!!

RMiller, and other replys

your right keep it simple, I've got a 6x47L reamer with a .272 no turn neck made to min spec's. Just wanted to check with you all to see how they shoot. Just didn't want to spend the $$$ and wish i had went the other way. I want a rifle i can shoot alot and not spend all my time in brass prep. It might not be as accurte as a turned neck gun, but i guess you have to give a little some where.

in2deep,

Does weigh sorting the case's make a big improvement in your group size?

another thing i discovered about the 6x47 lapua is that my blue box 6.5x47 brass's neck thickens as you go toward the neck/shoulder. if not turned, seating a flat base bullet with a pressure ring thru the neck gives one the feeling of increasing neck tension as the bullet approaches the shoulder...my reamer's freebore requires me to seat the bullet to the base of the neck to give the jump i wanted with the 80 gr fowler bullet. once i turned the necks very minimally and neck sized with a .268 bushing, the bullet slides thru the neck with uniform tension. my runout dropped to .002 or less and i noted tighter groups...just an observation.

Go with the 6x47L, a lot less work. You won't have to make a fake shoulder, blow it out, then start loading for groups. Fire forming sucks on barrel life ,brass life, not to mention the pocket book. Why not just resize and go.

"Keep it simple, stupid."
"Less is more."

sounds good, i think the 6x47L is the way to go. I am going to try the no turn neck and see how it does. If that don't work i can always rechamber!!!

Not a thing wrong with going .272 no turn. The same reamer I use. With the 272 you can still turn a minumal amount to just clean it up if you really feel you have to turn but IMO load them and shoot them.

Woops sorry for the confusing post.

I am not the author/ title holder and only posted the link and the quote in "italics" for information purposes to show how he does it.
