6 BRA Bullet Selection

Everyone measures bullets but how many cut them open and look at the core seating? you will soon see the good one's........ jim

Jim
Could you broaden your input to "core seating" inspection.
Would like to hear more in-depth what exactly you look for.
Donovan

Donovan,

I think Jim is looking to see if the bullet’s seated core has the proper amount and concentric bleed-by! Also no scraping of the jacket wall with a core seat punch that’s too big. Or excessive or uneven bleed-by created by too small of a core seat punch.

Bart

A Junke machine WILL NOT detect any of those flaws. I’ve owned three of them and ran all kinds of different tests.

Bart, I received the 105 Infinities today and they sure look good. I have a 300 yard match Saturday, but I won't be shooting any of these. However, I plan to test some at 600 yards after the match. My plans are to shoot 3, 3shot groups with different seating depths......005 off jam; .010 off jam; and .020 off jam. After I get a rough idea of a good seating depth, I plan to do a mini-ladder test (2 shots each)at that seating depth with 30.2 gr. H4895, 30.4 gr. H4895; 30.6 gr., 30.8 gr. and 31 gr. This barrel shows pressure fairly soon so I will stop at 31.0 gr.

Do you think that this is enough testing to determine a good 600 yard load? My rifle now sports a 28 inch barrel and I will chrono my best load after I get home. James

James,

Give it a shot! I like to get on the powder load first. Then the seating depth!

Let me know how it goes!

Bart

Jim if you are looking to see if the cores seating the same you can also measure with a needle inside the tip to see if they are all the same.

Joe Salt

Joe, that tells you nothing you look for what Bart said, you have to cut them open and see. You need a very sharp tool on a lathe to open them up........ jim

I have shot Berger 105 VLD (both hunting and target), Berger 108's, Hornady 105 A Max, EPS 106, Hillbilly 106's, Clay Spencer 103s (same dies as Vapor Trail), Sierra 107 MK, DTAC 115, Berger 95 VLDs, Don Lahr's 95 VLD and a few more in my Dashers. Bart's 105 Infinity has out performed all of them. Bart has nothing to do with this post, but I just want 6mm shooters to know that he is very conscientious about producing the best product that he can. Many of the bullets above are EXCELLENT and they may be best in your rifle and you should use the best available to you. Good shooting...James

James, I got a sample pack of the Infinities, never shot them yet. They have the rebated boat tail, I hear Bart will use a different boat tail punch if you ask. Are yours rebated or not?

Tim, I have shot both. The new ones that I just received do not have the rebated BT. I checked some of them (base to ogive and they tested great) I am going to shoot a mini-ladder at 600 yards Sat. in my 6mm BRAI and will try to post some of my results. Good shooting....James

After today's 300 yard match, I shot a mini-ladder at 600 yards with Bart's Infinity 105 gr. and H4895 powder. I almost decided to skip it today because the conditions were not favorable for testing.....but proceeded with heavy mirage and a switchy cross wind at 8-10 MPH with some gusts. My test consisted of 5, 2-shot groups with 30.2, 30.4, 30.6 (best 100 yard charge), 30.8, and 31.0 gr. The bullets were loaded at .005 off jam. The 31.0 gr. load was second best. Maybe I wasted 10 good bullets, but am glad that I did because we have a 600 yard match on 3/17/18 and I won't have to start from scratch. JamesDSCF2895.JPG
