6-6.5 x 47 build results...

Hi Guys... A few weeks ago, I asked for some "starting points" on my new 6-6.5 x 47 Lapua.. I appreciated the help. Well I have settled on a load and (If we don't get rained out) want to shoot it in "it's" first competition THIS Sunday! I settled on 38.7grs of H4350 / Fed 205GM's / 115 DTAC's seated 7K into the lands... This produces 3025F.P.S. with a 6.5 F.P.S. EXTREME spread for 20 shots!! It does NOT shoot like my 6mmBR, however, it does shoot between 7/8th" on the low side and 1&1/4 to 1&3/8th inches @ 300 yards... However, once you look at the speed and the B.C.'s of the 115 DTAC's, I believe this will be a real winner>>>now to see how it (as well as I ) perform at 300 yards this Sunday... I will let you know how I AND THE GUN did after the shoot... Also it has just over 200 rounds thru the barrel thus far.... Once we get to 350-400 we will see if it starts getting a little better accuracy... Thanks again guys...

Good luck and looking forward to the results. Shot my new 6X47L hunting rig build yesterday, with fire forming and new barrel it was <1/2 MOA at 200 yds. Probably a keeper! ::)

Sounds Like your gun is EXTREMELY accurate!! I hope it continues to shoot that way Mr. Majestic!! Now I have SOME news to report.. We got in ONE match before the rain forced the balance to be cancelled. However, I have some GREAT news and some INTERESTING news.. The great news is I shot a 199-16X at 300 yards. The INTERESTING news is, I did some "experimentation" and tried holding the rifle (in the grip area) a bit tighter>>>the shot went STRAIGHT DOWN and made it into the 9 ring... It was barely in the 9 ring, nonetheless it was in the 9 ring. So I went back to lightly holding it and right back to x's!! I also experimented with how the 115 DTACs would hold up in the wind. We had about a 75 percent wind flow from DIRECTLY behind us towards the targets. The other 25pct was from right to left. When the wind was from behind and I shot, it was either in the x ring or just on the ragged edge of it. So I decided to see what would happen when the wind was straight (or almost straight) from left to right. I held on the middle of what was by now a blown to pieces "X-ring" IN THE CENTER of it, and let her fly... To my surprise it drifted to the 9 o'clock position BUT still in the X ring!! Now the wind was about 5-6m.p.h. so I thought I might even end up in the 9 ring>>but those 115 DTACs at 3025 sliced thru the wind and only moved about 3/4"!! Very surprising to me... Normally, if I had had my 6mmBr, I would have held at the 3 o'clock position between the x and 10 rings for it to make the X ring!! So that was a nice surprise.. I wish we would not have got rained out>>I was going to do some more experimentin'...LOL!! However, for never having fired that rifle prone, let alone in a competition, I thought it did beyond expectations!! By the way Mr. Majestic, keep me posted on your rifle... Thanks again guys for your help...

I have a 30" Broughton 1-7.5 twist... A 1-8 will work, however, it will not hold accuracy past 600 yards... I intend to periodically use this rifle at 1000 yards... I shoot 300, 600 and 1000 yards F-Open.. Primarily, it will be used as a "windy day" 300 yard rifle, a "relatively calm day" 1000 yard rifle and swap at 600 yards with my 6.5 X 47 Lapua.. So if you want one to hang on to it's accuracy WAY out there>>>you will need a 1-7.5...

This post is very interesting to me, I have a couple of 6XC's one is 1n8 the other is 1n7.5 I have been told that the 1n8 would stabilise the 115 dtac's but I haven't tried it yet at 1,000. Next year at Grayling Mi. it will get it's time. I have always been suspect about using them in a 1n8.

Hi Paul...The 1-8 will stabilize 115 DTAC's to "about" 600 yards... To REALLY make it to 1000 yards with EXCELLENT vertical, you need a 1-7.5... I believe you would be better served with 105 Berger Hybrids. Think of it this way, you can send a 115 DTAC downrange at about 3000f.p.s. and a 105 Hybrid at 3100>>>>run the ballistics, there is little or no difference. If I were you, I would use the 105 Hybrids with that 1-8 twist barrel... However, that is what I think>>>maybe someone has some empirical evidence to the contrary..

I apologize for the 4 round group! The third shot went out approximately 1 1/4" right and I was able to keep it out of the photo by enlarging it. I would like to think I caught a sling swivel pin as this is a hunting rig and I was less than careful monitoring it. Understand these were rounds #10 through #20 down a new tube and first firing on reformed cases. I was very excited about the 4 rounds and felt compelled to share. The 5 round group is probably more realistic to abilities. ::)

Hello again Mr. Majestic! Methinks the animals are more worried about your rig, the way it is shooting, than you are about ALWAYS putting all five shots in the same hole! You have little to worry about!! They on the other hand, well!!! LOL!!! I have always said, and MY shooting history has proved me correct: You have an EXCELLENT load if 1.) it shoots pretty well MOST of the time; 2.) shoots AWESOMELY well some of the time AND 3.) shoots "so-so" some of the time! No load that I have ever witnessed shoots "lights-out" ALL THE TIME! So for not ONLY a hunting rig, but some would love to have a rifle as accurate as yours! Your rifle shoots VERY well Mr. Majestic!....

Thanks for the suggestion about 105 Hybrid's, I shot them last week at 600 and they did well, dropped a couple of points, not the arrow, the Indian was the problem. I did manage to shoot some 7 X's in a row indicating the 105 Hybrids are working very well in the 1n8 twist.

Hey Paul! Excellent shooting!! Those 105 Hybrids REALLY shoot very well!! I use them in my 6mmBr and it is amazing in that rifle... Now that I have a decent load with the 115 DTACS, I want to develop a load using the 105 Hybrids... I am not a person that likes just 1 load... I like "back-up" loads for every rifle... You never know when you will run out of a certain bullet or powder>>> it happened before not too terribly long ago...
