6.5x47 velocity

Jimbo, I run a 28" barrel and have a free bore of .135". I've tried H4350 with a couple different bullets and couldn't get over 2800 with 130 or 136 gr. bullets and a compressed load. My 6.5x47 has shot very well with Varget behind both bullet weights. The 130s ran best at ~2875 and the 136s best at ~2830. My brass has been fired 11 times now and the primer pockets are still very tight. This barrel has about 2200 rounds down it and it still shoots very good. I shoot F-Class with it.

Your barrel may speed up. Mine did at 200 rounds. My 6.5x47 was built by RBros. Has a 26” Broughton and pushes 130 Berger hunting at 2950 fps. Drops are bang on out to 910 yds. Not sure what reamer RBros uses but it works. Load is 42.2 gr of H4350. Travis assured me it’s not max in this gun. Haven’t tried anything other than this load he set up for me. Don’t think I could improve it. As always work up to this load.

I shoot 142 Sierra MK, 37.5 gr Varget, Fed GMM primers out of a 26" barrel and right on 2800 FPS measured with Lab Radar at 70F.

I am just getting into this caliber but after shooting several different loads of 4350 over my magneto speed and working up to higher presure loads shooting 130 eld-m hornadys i cannot get near the velocity most are saying they get out of there guns , I have a 26" shilen and load up to a little over 42.5 gr but barely get over 2850fps .
How is everyone getting all this speed , some are even talking 2900+ fps shooting 139-140gr pills ?
I am using a Brux 4r 26" barrel , and have 2 pet loads, 1st is 40 grns of RL17 on a 140gr Elite hunter by Berger and CCI450 primers, I am getting 2840 fps with a SD of less than 10 , 2nd load is 40grs of H4350,with same bullet and primer. this one gets me 2750 fps. both very accurate. And show 0 pressure signs. I don't know, good luck.

Seems you could do better I shoot 2820 FPS 155 gr in .308 26 inch barrel and have more room case capacity with IMR 4064, shilen prefit barrel

So I got my new rifle built and did some load testing yesterday , 41gr of 4350 under a 123 amax gave me about 2950 fps . Witch seems about normal so I think my magneto speed is working correct .
I simply cannot figure out why my other barrel is so slow .

41gr of 4350 out of my barrel (26") with 130 eldm's will only produce about 2730 fps
That's what I cannot understand. I have to load hot to get what others are getting a

What twist barrel? Try RL 17. As others have posted, mid 2800s are the sweet spots.

I checked some old MS chrono data, with 130 VLDs, I was getting 2963 average four shots. This is out of a #3 contour 24", 8.5 twist nitrided barrel with RL 17. I tried, with poor results, Swift 120gr A-Frames (for hunting) and MV was a skosh over 3000. Never could figure out why so little difference in velocity.

50fps? That's nothing to be concerned about. Until you've got 300+ rounds through it you really don't know how fast it be. And barrels change by more than 50fps over their life span. And like Geno said, some barrels are slow. As long as it's accurate just shoot it.

RL-17 is magical and has always had wide windows of great accuracy for me, but you need to pay attention to temperatures if you're running at the top end of the pressure. As mentioned, it's temp sensitive and a high pressure load in the winter will blow out primers in the summer if not adjusted down.

Most people need to put their chronographs away because obsessing over the speed isn't productive. That extra 50 or 100fps isn't going to make any difference in your scores or accuracy and chasing it when you've got a slow barrel is just a way to disappoint yourself. Find where it likes to shoot without using a chrono, then use the chrono only long enough to get a reliable speed for your drop calculations (10 shots, at most). Take the chrono off and put it away.

Any load that has shot well on paper for me has chrono'ed with low SD and ES. It only works that way though. Don't work a load up looking at your SD and ES and expect it to shoot great; that's backwards.
