6.5x47 velocity

I am just getting into this caliber but after shooting several different loads of 4350 over my magneto speed and working up to higher presure loads shooting 130 eld-m hornadys i cannot get near the velocity most are saying they get out of there guns , I have a 26" shilen and load up to a little over 42.5 gr but barely get over 2850fps .
How is everyone getting all this speed , some are even talking 2900+ fps shooting 139-140gr pills ?

Hello Jimbo 10X! There are some things you may have overlooked. 1.) As Savagedasher states are "they" shooting in a 26" barrel. Most that use this cartridge are shooting either Benchrest or F-Open! 30" barrels are the norm. However, even if you had a 30" barrel, in order to get 140 class bullets moving above 2900, 2 things must be / are happening: 2.) They are running the pressures pretty dang high>>>>higher than most! 3.) "More than likely" they are also using Viht N550, which will terrorize your throat!
I have had 5 (yes that is correct) 5 / 6.5 x 47s. I have never been able to get TO 2900, even using RL-16, which is in the same burn rate range as H4350, yet produces considerably more velocity! I have found, no matter the powder, 2825-2840 is where the accuracy lies! FORGET SPEED! If you want MORE speed, get a .260A.I. or a 6.5 x 284! These will get you to 2975+ where the higher node exists, without pushing the limits of pressure! No matter how fast you go, if you can't hit, due to "less than stellar" accuracy, what good is it?

I shot many of 260.AI
With 30” barrels
The fastest case was a 6.5 wSSM
It had a 34” barrel
3200 FPS with 140 GR was easy
Any faster the bullet would blow up
Barrel lingth is probably the problem
N 550 will gain your a lot speed

Not to deter you but honestly the 6.5x47 case just doesn’t have enough boiler room to push the 140’s at any great speed. I’m pushing the 130’s from my 26” barrel at 2875 with 41.0 H4350 and 2840 from a 30” barrel with 37.5 grains Varget. This seems to be where they want to shoot.
I hear about guys pushing bullets in the 2900+ fps range with 24-26” barrels using same powder charges I use in a 30” barrel and honestly I can’t with any accuracy and I just have say BS also on their claimed speeds.
Load for accuracy and you’ll be very happy. Let the velocity fall where it may.

41gr of 4350 out of my barrel (26") with 130 eldm's will only produce about 2730 fps
That's what I cannot understand. I have to load hot to get what others are getting a

That's odd. I have two 6.5x47Ls. Both shooting 142SMKs and the occasional 140BH. The 28" Border 5R with Varget runs 2745fps and the 26" Krieger 4 groove runs 2835fps with 42gr H4350.

How are you measuring?

I wonder if maybe there is a touch too much headspace, making pressure signs show early. Maybe I missed it, but is this with new brass or resized. If resized, have you measured how much HS you're running and what is it?

Edit: a buddy of mine has a Tikka in 6.5Creed that is running 100-150 fps below average with factory ammo. He has a few hundred rounds through it now and it's not speeding up. His come ups to 1k were consistant with mighty MSV3 readings, so we chalk it up to a slow barrel. Happens.

Use another cronies. Getting 2950 with a very mild load of H4350 on 123gr bullets on a 26in barrel here. I have even pushed it to 3150 once but preferred the longer barrel life of the lower node.

I have a stock Rem 700 with a 24" barrel, 2980 120gr lapua scenar L.
A Borden action 26" barrel 2690fps w/Berger 140 hybrids.
Bat action 16.5" barrel 2500 fps w/JLK 130gr vld.

Mine with a 26" barrel shoots best at 2775 with 140's, 2875 with 130's, and shoots superb with 123 SMK doing 2950.

28" Bart 5R on a Bat VR, H-4350 140 hybrid with loooong FB shoots 2775 and comes in again at 2880 fps. Currently running 2880 fps brass loaded 10x. absolute hammer.

I am building another 6.5L should be done in the next couple weeks . Gonna try some of the same loads in it and compare velocities.
Great little cartridge , just trying to learn all i can about it .

2,850 fps from a 26" barrel is pretty good with 130 gr.

Hodgdon's data for the 130 tmk got up to 2,823 fps with a 30" barrel.

Some folks like to push the limits. I'm not one of them.
