6.5x47 Lapua?

Hey all, I starting to think about a new barrel for my Savage m12 LRPV. Right now its a 204 ruger and I really like the caliber but the with short barrel life and how much I shoot I'm thinking that its only a matter of time until its time for a new barrel.

This has me thinking about new calibers to try. I'd like something that can reach out to 1000 yards but most of the time my shooting is done within 600 yards. Longer barrel life would also be nice. (2000+ rounds would be nice) Keeping the cost of operation low would be nice. This is just my plinking gun.

The 6.5x47 has my interest right now. Are there many people shooting them? I tried a search and didn't come up with much. What kind of barrel ware are people seeing?

What bolt face does the 6.5x47 use? 308?

Any other calibers worth looking at?

Thanks.

I have both my silhouette rifles chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua. It is in my opinion the best HP silhouette cartridge to date. I have gotten 2-3 thousand rounds out of my barrels but am only shooting 107s and 142s in the 2650 fps range. Brass is on the expensive side but I anneal every 5-6 firings so I haven't had any problem with split necks etc. I can't say enough good things about it.

Thanks for the info.

Anyone know what bolt head it uses?

Give Don Stark a call at: http://sandsprecisionrifles.com/staff.cfm He's not only a master machinist / gunsmith but also a very active long range competitor. A great combination! And, hard to find.

He's got many of your answers. Here's some of the tools you'll need for the 6.5x47 too: http://sandsprecisionrifles.com/ServiceDetail.cfm?ID=16

Meet Don here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_EUt7nMyp0

Better yet, a 6.5X47 build taking place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1opz3d97iY8&feature=related

I have a 6.5x47 built on a Savage Dual Port Target Action, with a Pac-Nor barrel and a Tracker stock. Deadly on Prairie Dogs, good BR gun.

Look at the 6BR as well. It is very accurate and easy to load.

Neither of these is as flat shooting as the .204.

+1 for Don Starks. I met him at a 400 yard shoot in Huntsville, TX about 3 months ago. VERY personable and gave the good, bad, ugly on both the 6BR and 6.5x47. Gave me good advice, "what do you want to do with it?"

Ended up picking up a 6.5x57 he built for a customer who had too many guns. His loss, my gain. Still working up loads, but so far, VERY easy to load for and great results thus far.

Give Don a call, you won't be disappointed.

Shameless plug. But for a new with a used price 6.5x47 lapua barrel, check out the one I have listed in the classifieds.

Get the 6.5x47, barrel life and accuracy are both superb!

TxBoy shot my "47" at 1,000 yards, I believe it was his first time shooting at that distance and he was scoring in the 190's in F-Class with my rifle, he can tell you about the accuracy of the cartridge.

Get a 1:8" barrel to handle the heavy bullets. I shoot 139 gr. Lapua Scenars in mine from 300 - 1,000 yards and it does great all the way through. Some people have good luck with the 130 gr. class bullets.

Here is a pic of my 6.5x47L. I built it for 600 yd. sling/prone only. 130 class bullets at 2,979 and 123's at 3,120. 1/2 moa accuracy all day if the nut behind the trigger does his part. It has a very large tuning window and with the reamer that I had cut by Dave Kiff, is probably why. I hope you like yours as much as I do mine,
Lloyd

Lloyd, who made your prone stock? It looks very similar to the Robertson H&H prone stocks I have on several of my rifles. Whatever, it's a great-looking rifle, and I like your choice of cartridge - I've built myself four 6.5x47s, and am very pleased with all of them.

Dennis,
The stock is a duplicate of a McMillan A-5. A fellow club member is a great wood worker/stock builder and has a duplicator. I had him cut the stock you see as well as an Alex Sitman stock on my 1K rifle so I can switch from 600 to Palma to 1K and have the exact same feeling stock on all three rifles. BTW, the blank is from Boyds. I hope I answered your questions,
Lloyd
