6.5x47 HV gun?

28” @ 2900 FPS with 130 Berger hybrids
I just built another one with a shorter 24” barrel and have been extremely impressed in 300 and 400 yard matches with it. Won a few score and groups with it.
I just had my rifle rebarreled in 6.5x47 with a .293 neck as well.
What powders worked best for you ?

My 6.5x47L will be here Monday I went with a 26" MTU 1-8. Accuracy first... but I hope I can get 2900 muzzle velocity with H4350 & the 130 hybrids it is my understanding that the 6.5 x 47 Lapua was really invented for 108 123 and 130 projectile yes I know people are shooting and have been shooting for a long time 140 grain projectile. My 6.5 Creedmoor 28in shilen select match 44 grains h4350 Hornady brass doing nothing special to the brass at all use Hornady dies Deluxe BR primers, that thing is a freaking laser I get 3100 muzzle velocity, brass is on its 5 * fired now, it's still perfectly fine I have shot groups that measure 1 1/4" groups at 500 yards. Now where I live in Ohio Noble County there are a lot of Hills and Valleys so when I shoot I am kind of down in a valley and their conditions are basically perfect if there is any wind it is 1 mile an hour left to right. So that help duh,, so I guess I am kind of blessed to have a place to shoot out of a thousand yards like that. I have a 6" Steel hanging onto chains at a thousand yards and a 22" by 18" Steel for sighters at the right of it. after I get the dope corrected on the 22" by 18" I switch over to the 6" circle and nail that sucker multiple times . Hope the 6.5 x 47 Lapua will be as accurate don't see why not.

You should be able to get 2900 out of the 26”. I have a 24” that shoots 2860 with the same load I shoot out of the 28” gun. You will love the round. Easy to tune to your needs.

H4350 and Varget are all I ever ran. I shoot 5 shot groups and length tune the load that has the smallest standard deviation.
I shot a few groups today with different charge weights.
Best sd I had was 1.7 . This was with 123 scenars seated 20 thou from the lands.
I will try some different seating depths now and I am looking for some advice.

SD 1.7 is good. Roll that load at 300-400 at different seating depths and pick the groups with the least vertical in them. Then go win some matches.

Been thinking about having a gun built for fun and local BR comps (Byers, CO) at 1000yrds. I was originally thinking I would just build a straight 6BR, but recently started to think about what might work a bit better for the wind I've got here. I know the big step up would be to a 300 WSM, but that's A LOT of powder and recoil.

What's the consensus on 6.5x47 for BR work? All the talk I found searching happened years ago and seemed largely speculative. I'm feeling like it probably isn't a great option since I've not heard of anyone running them success

6mm Dasher and you can thank me later. Tommy Mc

Who produced your stock/blank?
I missed this question because the site didn't give me a notification (or I missed it). It is a desert sunset laminate blank from Richard's Microfit. https://richardsmicrofitgunstocks.com/product/laminated-blanks/

Not a terribly high quality blank and their glue-up of the forearm extension to reach 3" wide left some to be desired. The layers didn't match up, causing a break in the pattern and the glue line was uneven and had voids as I shaped it. About all I can say in support of it is that it's affordable and arrived promptly.

@Evan thank you for resurrecting this thread! I already bought a bucket of popcorn waiting for you to make this one in a lifetime decision on caliber choice.

So to change tracks a little, do bushing dies cause bad donut problems with the 6.5x47? Jim's freebore of 0.170 seems a touch on the short side for 140s, so bearing length may be in the donut region.

Also, how much tension does the 6.5 usually like? My 22BR and my 20 Vartarg prefer minimal: barely over 0.001" and so I'm think about ordering a honed Forester FL at 0.2885 to get started with. Thoughts?

This is a 140 Hybrid at touch in my 47, my reamer is a JGS 0.170”FB, it works well with 130 VLD’s and ELD’s as well

Im now shooting 22BR again and have a 22 PPC barrel in the works. The 22 has treated me better than any of the 3 6.5x47 barrels I went through.

Do any of you folks who shoot the 6.5x47 have experience with a 6BR variant and feel that the x47 made life better or easier?

I'm drawn to the longer barrel life and the better ballistics of the x47. I shoot ~5000 rounds a year and burn out a barrel every 12-18mo across multiple rifles I cycle through. A Dasher feels a bit short on barrel life, like I'll have to worry about saving it or have spare barrels ordered every 6 mo to cover the 1 per year replacement rate.

I've been shooting 6BR and x47L for years. X47L is stupid accurate, easy to load for and bucks the wind better at distance.. my 2 cents

All my barrels liked the berger 153.5 on top of a compressed pile of RL-16. The barrel life suffered but boy did it shoot!

shooting a group like that, tell about your rifle please, history details! great shooting.

Sure here my notes from load development and rifle info.

Shot a load confirmation today with the 135gr A-Tips. Finally got around to testing them. Super wide node in my barrel with Varget. POI was exactly the same from 37gr - 38.2gr in 0.2gr increments. Every charge weight had single digit SD's and was sub 0.5" @ 100yds. I had zero pressure signs, no sticky bolt, primers looked great across all the charge weights.

I did a load confirmation with this load at 1000yd 5 shots and they stacked on top each other on a steel plate. Impacts measured just under 0.3moa

Smallest 1K group I have ever shot in a match. 37.0 gr of Varget behind a Berger 140 Long Range Boat Tail, .006” off the lands. Federal 205M primer.

Normally this load produces 3-4”, 1K 5 shot groups in good conditions. This one was very unexpected but welcome!

Rifle was a Wheeler built Bat B with a Krieger barrel in an LRB stock. This HG weighs 22 pounds as set up.

It’s an awesome little cartridge.
