6.5 x 47 Lapua maximum velocity/accuracy obtainable?

Lot of talk about the 6.5 x 47 Lapua as to velocity with a 140 gr bullet .

So I figured an example was in order, such as a 26" barrel witch is a somewhat standard for long range rifles in hunting and some accuracy disciplines.

So what are you guys getting with "your barrel (and length) and bullet with the 140 gr projectiles regardless of barrel length". No one (experienced) should have a problem interpolating the differences in velocities relative to barrel length hopefully.

However length of barrel should be given as well as bullet type, powder load information.

This should benefit a lot of people .

In general they shoot the best from 2800-2880fps

I shoot an improved version, push the shoulder forward .100, with 140's and H4350, br4 primers and a 28" barrel I shoot them at 2860fps but I have pushed them to 2960 with easy bolt lift and good looking primers.

My last barrel (30")shot best at 2920fps using the 140gr bt long range target, not hybrid. When I was working up loads I went as high as 3000fps before I started getting ejector marks.
Hope my next barrel will shoot as well.

Impressive velocity. What powder?

I can get the high speeds with my 28 inch barrel with 140 Hybirds but if I want accuracy 2750 is where I am at,,I was shooting today and was shooting 2 1/2 and 3 inch groups at 800 yards with the 140 with 36.2 grs IMR 4166 at 2740 with SD of less than 10,

I can get good accuracy with 123 Scenar and 42.7 H4350 with pretty good chronie results also,,

pic of magnetospeed with 123/H4350 load

+1 only with hybrids out of a 28" Bart.

It's not so much the barrel length that gets the speed, its the free bore. Guys running high speed 140's are running more FB which is unobtainable with the lower FB.

,,what powders are yall using to get 2900++ with accuracy,,I can get the speed with a couple powders but hit pressure around 2900 with H4350 and cant get the 2950 accuracy node without pressure,,shoots good at 2750-2800 with Varget,RL15,H4350 and IMR4166

28 inch 5r Bartlien,,140 HT coal is 2.875

I've only used H4350. Chamber is .175fb.
Compared to the cut rifled barrels I've loaded for, this particular broughton button barrel is shooting a little faster.
I'm waiting on a new reamer and hopefully I'll have another broughton ready to load for in a few weeks.
I'm looking for accuracy over speed, but extra speed is a benefit.

H-4355 .198" free bore
Your OAL measurement would be 25thou jam in my rifle, and I am running more FB than most. Mine ran great at 2800 fps and even better at the next node. How are you loading them in relation to the lands?

Boersma, Can you post a pic of both a regular 6.5X47L and you improved version next to each other

here you go, the 6.5 OUTLAW

Hi Jason, really like the picture, glad Colo204 requested it.

Looks like you kept the same shoulder angle, and nudged it forward some. Can you tell me what the water capacity is of the fire formed case?

Would you care to give the specifications on your rifle also ?

It works, I have pushed the 140 hybrid to 2960 And probably could have gone a little faster but stopped because the accuracy was getting worse.

I do not know what the water capacity is of the case. I shoot the case out of my 41lb heavy gun, Bat model b, 28" brux barrel, mcmillian 50HBR stock with 6" rail plate on the front and a Nightforce comp scope.
