A while back I had started a thread about my new 6.5-284......Krieger 17# HV BBl screwed onto my BAT 1000 LG with a NF NSX 12-42. The thing shot like ass, and every other BBL I had for that platform shot lights out. Finally gave up on it, cleaned it up, and shipped it off to my smith with about 140 rounds on it.
He found a carbon build up...I didn't ask where it was, but his guess was that i had 300 - 400 rounds through it even though it only had 140. Makes sense, since (I thought) it was cleaning up very well and I hadn't used a brush on it since break-in. I had been running wet patches through till it was "clean" and finished with a 15 min soak with Sweets. Patches came out white as snow. He also re-crowned it.
Got it back and started to retest. It obviously didn't shoot as good as my dashers, but it seemed to shoot ok. I settled on a load of 52 H4831 SC/140 Berger Hybrid
. All of my testing is done with the bullet jammed .010- .015 into the lands......it is how I always test, and then test my way out of the lands. The last test group I shot was about 2 1/2 inch 5 shot group at my 750 yard target....very acceptable!! (see picture) I then proceded to do a seating depth test...also at 750. I tested 5 shots at .010 into, .010 off, and .030 off round robbin style. I fired 4 quick shots at my gong for zero and to build some heat. I then shot at 1 min intervels...temp was 38 degrees.....1 - 2 mph 10:00 wind and overcast...ZERO mirage. Perfect conditions for testing
Gun shot like ASS....AGAIN...see picture. Tracking was very good with very little effort to get back onto the mothball.
Getting frustrated. The round robin test was 12" tall and the best verticle was 8 1/2 inches!!
