6-284

i am going to be putting together a 6-284 here real soon.
it will have a 30" barrel with a 1:9 twist
i am hoping to be able to shoot 95 grain bergers at 3500 or so. i am wondering if anyone does this currently with similar results to what i am looking for. i use reloader 22 out of my 243 ai to drive these bergers, but i have recently heard that the reloader 22 is inconsistent between lots commonly. could any of you guys help me with some loads please.

thanks,
caleb

I think your quest would be obtainable possibly with your setup, I have used RL-22 in my 6*284 with satisfactory results with 1:8 twist and 107 SMK's I have not tried the berger 95's so I can't say for sure, if you don't get any replies try giving 40X Guy or johnnymeyers a p.m they may be able to help you.

Caleb,
I see that we are almost neighbors, I live in the far S.E tip of the state on the banks of the Grande Ronde river, about 145 miles south of you, about 40 miles south of Lewiston Idaho.

Also I find most powders differ lot to lot that is why I buy in bulk and usually buy enough to wear the barrel out in one purchase.
Wayne.

For reference, I had a 27" Hart 10 twist that pushed the 95VLD's at 3600 with IMR 7828, so 3500 in 30 inches is quite doable.

I mostly shoot 1K BR,.....and you?

Give Ironworker a Pm, he did a lot of testing with RL17 in his 6/284 fast twist. I know my 6/284, 12T likes RL22 & RL17.

alf, thanks for all the help and talking to me regarding my 6/284 build. So far I really enjoy the flat shooting ballistics.

I think you can get the velocity you want. I shoot a 1:8 27.5 inch PacNor and am getting 3235 with 117 DTACS (plastic tipped ones) using Ramshot Magnum powder with no pressure issues. In load workup I was at 3575 with 107 SMKs. That load was a little hot so with a lighter load, longer bbl and lighter bullets it should work for you. The Magnum powder burns alot cooler than any of the stick powders I tried. Good luck.

i have never used any of the ramshot powders, but have asked thier ballistician about a load for the gun and he said about the same that i should be able to with the barrel length and those bullets being lighter. how is that powder for temp, and consistency between lots? i may be wanting to try it out

Caleb
This is the first Ramshot I've tried. I read an article on Barnes web on a temp sensitivty study and the Magnum was even better than H1000 also the ball powder spreads heat the length of the bbl more so than stick powder which will decrease throat erosion. You can still get your bbl hot with Magnum but not nearly as fast. All you can do is try it and see if it works for you.

hanks john sounds good to me i will have to pick some up and get some loads done up once i know my seating depth

I built a 6X284 about 7 years ago and love it! I shoot 1K any/any matches and it hungs in there. I have a shilien barrel 1X8 twist using Lapua 6.5X284 necked down. the 107 SMK are the best bullets it likes to feed on. Varget is the powder I use.

how is that varget doing in your barrel for heat and all. i like varget in my smaller guns, but thought it burnt too hot and fast for the lager weight bullets

From my experiences Varget would not be the powder of choice for the 6*284 and especially for the heavier bullets. I have had the best luck with RL-22 and H-4350.

i have reloader 22, magnum, h1000, retumbo, 4895 and a couple others.
i have been using the reloader 22 with great success out of my 243 ai. i have been hearing some good things about magnum powder, i am real interested in trying that. i have been using the 95 grain bergers and doing well with them, but would like to try some of the 95 grain smk's and see how they compare.
