6-284 help

Ok, I've decided to build a 6-284 as my long range varmint rig. I know it is overbore and a barrel burner. I will be shooting 105 gr bullets. Hybrids and Amax if they ever become available. It seems RL22 and F210 are popular. It will be on a Savage PTA and either a Pacnor or Shilen prefit 8 twist. There are two choices for a neck. Either a .270 or .277 neck. I will be using 6.5-284 Lapua brass. I'm going to assume the .270 is a tight neck. I don't mind turning necks if it will help. What should the freebore be for the 105's? Is there anything I need to know about this caliber? Thanks in advance.

I HAD A LOT OF GRIEF WITH MINE (2) 8 TWIST AND 13 TWIST...GOT SOME BAD INFO WITH THE 108 AND 105.. WAY TOO MUCH RL22 ..WORKED ON MY OWN WITH THE 13 WITH 70 GRAIN..GETS ASTOUNDING RESULTS OUT TO 800 YARDS WITH 105 AND 108.....RL 19 WORKS AS DOES RL22..START LOW WITH RL22 43 GRAINS AND WORK UP...ALL MY LIFE I HAVE JAMMED TARGET BULLETS....MY 105 WORK FINE JUMPIN AS MUCH AS 35 THOU..START JUMPING ALONG WITH LOW POWDER LOADS...WORK UP ON POWDER THEN SHORTEN THE JUMP IT WILL WORK..USE STANDARD RIFLE PRIMERS...DO NOT GET A LOAD WORKED UP THEN CHANGE TO MAGNUM PRIMERS...DONT ASK HOW I KNOW..HODGDON HAS 6 284 LOADING DATA..LT

Thanks. Trying to figure out what neck and freebore I should use. I know it wont last long, but it will be fun while it lasts.

Op,,,dont do it,,,,go with 6mm BR ,,,shoots wayy more accurately, 4 times the bbl life,,1/2 the powder,,shootin is too much fun to fool with a 6x284,,,,Roger
PS,,,yes I have had one of em !!!

I have a 6br and love it. This is for the 500-1000 yard shots

So, what didn't you like about it?

I found my best results using by H4831 52.9g, obtaining 3224mv using 115DTAC and 8 twist barrel 30.5" (muzzle to bolt face)... You might find different results, so start at a lower charge

SHOT THAT CAL. SOME TIME BACK ,NOW I SHOOT A 243IMP W/75ths FREEBORE W/105 BERGERS

I like my 6-284, very fast and a very good longer range shooter. Accuracy was not so great up close but did shine from 300 - 850 yds w/ 107 Sierra's, Fed 210M, and RL-22 (49.5gr), 30" Hart - fluted 8 twist. Can run a little more powder in the 8 twist Shilen prefit I have discovered, accuracy is ok but could be better.

I have not tried Dtacs yet, really wanting to, though. I do not like Berger bullets as they have blown up on me many times, never a problem with Sierra. Shot Amax early on, they were ok.

You will need to be sure to get the 6-284 Norma, my 6-284Win. reamer would not allow me to use Lapua brass as the case dimensions are larger. Tried many times and many different ways.

Good luck.

Thanks. I didn't even realize there were to different kinds. What groove barrel did you have the bullets blow up on? I've only heard this on 3 groove.

I have had the same one with a Hart barrel since 1997. I set the chamber back once after about the first 900 rounds. I have about 500 rounds through it on the new chamber and it will still shoot in the .2's at 100 yards and shoots 1/4 MOA or less all the way out past 1000 yards. I switched to 53gr of H-1000 and the 105 Berger VLD about 8 years ago and have not looked back. R-22 is OK if your temp is stable if it is not I would look at H-1000. When using R-22 where I live in ND I had to have a summer load and a winter load because I would lose up to 150fps in the winter with a load I worked up in the summer. My barrel is a 9 twist and is now 27" after the set back.

My load with R-22 I was shooting the 105 Berger at 3356 FPS with my H-1000 load I am at 3252fps. On the comment about accuracy my 6-284 is more accurate then the 6BR I had at 100 yards or 600 yards. Granted both guns shoot 1/4 MOA or less but over all the 6-284 was the winner out of the two. My dad has two 6-284's and both of those rifles are 1/4 MOA or less so this caliber does really shoot.

No, my barrel is not a 3 groove, but the Berger 105's did blow up a few times on me.

Planning to give H-1000 another try, have the same temp issues here in MN. Thanks for the load info, looked back 13 years and was shooting 54.5gr H-1000; also tried H50BMG 57.0gr very compressed but shot the same POI. Will also rechamber (no turn) and recrown very soon; getting close to 1000 rds down the barrel.

My Shilen pre-chambers are no turn 8 twist, new barrel shoots nice, used barrel not so much and with a very different POI.

I found that RE 22 was to hot to get the velosity that I needed, I went up to RE 25 and got great results with no pressure problems. Bullets were 105 Berger's and 107 SMK's.

Thanks. I am going to try ramshot magnum powder as well. Ball powder and cooler burning, should help lessen erosion. Think I am going to go with a .277 neck.

You need to read up on "Ironworker" he posts here and has good info on the 6-284 and powders.

Pacific Tool and Gauge made my 6mm-284 reamer. It is a .277" no turn neck. Loaded ammo is neck OD is .2735" with Lapua brass. I can put the 115s, 107s or 105 berger hybrids into the rifling if I choose. I tried the 115 DTACs and 107 Sierra into the rifling. Later on I seated the 105 hybrids with a .065" jump so they could feed from a Wyatt's mag box.

The rifle has a 28" barlein 5R 1 in 7.5 twist to shoot 115s. Heard that 115 bergers might blow up so tried 115 DTACs for a while. Never was satisfied. Tried both RL-22 and Retumbo with the 115s and 107 Sierra MK. Had comparable velocities with either powder with these weight bullets.
At least the 107 sierras were very accurate in this rifle.

When Bergers came out switched to them as they had higher BC than 107 Sierras.
Used Retumbo for a bit over 3300 fps.

Then RL-33 came out and really lit up this rifle. Worked up from 61 gr to a load that MY rifle liked which is 64 gr. Velocity was a major jump to 3445 fps Remember the berger hybrids are seated .065" from rifling so any load workups you do may be quite a bit different.

As for barrel life, the bartlein barrel now has 975 through it. The borescope view is horrific and cleanup takes a while but it still shoots nice tight clusters out as far as I have shot it which is 545 yds. I have a second barrel another 5R bartlein waiting. This one has a 1 in 8 twist because I have no intentions of using anything else but those wonderful high BC 105 Berger match target hybrids.

Re: 6-284 help

Hello,

For what its worth I will add my two cents, if you don't mind. I have had three 6mm/284's. The last was a serious heavyweight varmint weapon with KRIEGER 32 inch barrel 1-8 twist. H1000 and RE 25 were not available when this rifle was built. It consumed RE 22 and with the 105 Sierra it got 3,569 fps which astounded me.
I took it rockchuck hunting in Idaho and seemingly this round violated rules of physics with its flatness and windbucking ability. All this lasted less than 500 rounds. Yes it was fun while it lasted, but using a quality barrel, benchrest specs and a bench rest gunsmith, it was costly fun.
Since the advantage of high velocity is that you can be in error as to the range to the target and still make the shot; all this was important ten years ago. Nowadays with a good rangefinder you KNOW the distance, your concern is wind drift. Therefore you may consider building a remarkable accurate weapon and , using the rangefinder, make some incredible shots with a precision rifle that with a smaller capacity cartridge that does not wear out your throat at record rates will last you a a very long time.

Good shooting to you,

RossL, thanks. That helps and great looking rig.

Bobthenailer, thanks for the link. I read it.

Gene so, appreciate the input. Wow, 500 rounds, that's a bit quick. I'm looking at a Shilen prefit for my savage, so changing a barrel shouldn't be as big a deal. I'm looking at it like this, this rifle will be for long range prairie dog shooting out to 1000 yards. I will take 200 rounds with me for each trip I make once a year. So I should get at least 4 years out of it.

And as far as your thoughts on the velocity advantage. I agree to a point. I have thought about all you said before. But after shooting long distance out there for years I know how hard it is to accurately range distance out there. Even with a good rangefinder. What you think is 900 could easily be 1000. And that is where the flatter cartridge will help on a 6 inch target. I currently have a 6br and when the barrel goes, it will be a Dasher, so I think I will have it all covered.

Thanks to everyone that took time to resond. This is a great forum. I have learned A LOT here over the past couple of years.
