6-284 loads help please

Hotshot

Silver $$ Contributor
I recently acquired a 6-284 barrel 8twist. I loaded up some test loads of 44 and 45 grains 4831 and 105 Amax bullets. Seems pretty mild on pressure and shot well. I was 1/2 minute low at 1200 yards from my ballistic chart.
What's the problem? Well, I don't have much 4831 and Hornady doesn't make the Amax bullets anymore. Looking at the Hornady number 8 reloading manual is confusing to me. Looks like they loaded it clear up to equal the performance of a 243.
I'd like to use 4350 because I have many pounds of it. I'm hoping to find a load using that and 105-115 grain bullets. Can anyone help me from experience? I'm a careful reloader and always work up.

Hodgdon has data. Otherwise you can use 240 Weatherby data as a guideline. I can't help with that weight class, but 4831 was good. It seems to like RL22 as well.

H4350 is a little to fast for the heavies. I use H4350 in my 6-284 but I'm shooting the much lighter 75gr Vmax. RL26 or Viht N565, if you can find any, will be two powders that will work well with the heavies. Maybe even H1000 too but like RL26 and N565, if you don't already have some finding any could be nearly impossible. RL23 is real similar in burn rate to RL22 but has the added bonus of being much more temp stable and RL23 is sometimes a little easier to find than any of those others.

"Looking at the Hornady number 8 reloading manual is confusing to me. Looks like they loaded it clear up to equal the performance of a 243." The 6-284 has a pretty healthy case capacity advantage over the 243 so it should always out speed the 243.

I went to the bench yesterday with 44.5 grains of 4831 behind the 115 Dtac bullets. Slight flattening of the primers but no significant pressure signs. This load absolutely poured the bullets into the same hole at 100. I guess I'm done load testing. I'll chronograph and build a ballistic chart. The rifle loves it so why fight it.
