6/250 W-W case seperation

List: While F/L resizing necked up W-W 22-250 cases that Ive fired for the 3x in my 6/250 Ive found that serveral of the case showed signs of web to body seperation. Upon sectioning a case I found that the case had "thinned" out in the web area. I discarded several suspect cases.

The headspacing is near "0" so I dont think Im over working the brass and I would of thought that I would get more than 3x firing before I had "problems with cases. Some of my LC .308 brass I use in my Palma rifle have been fired 6,7, 8 times with out "problem".

The W-W brass was purchased new, 100 case bulk pack. I "heard" that some of the bulk pack brass has had "issues".

Before I purchase anymore W-W brass I would like to know if others firing the 6/250 are having "brass problems"? If so what are you doing about it? I contacted Superior Shooting and asked them the same. I "think" I heard that the 6XC case has a "stronger" web and perhaps I could resize 6XC brass to 6/250.

Any ideas?

I have W-W 250 Savage brass formed into 6-250 and it has 6 firings on it with no problems. I also have Lapua 308 brass made into this cartridge with 6 firings on it with no problems. Both of these case types are still holding primers as they did as new.

When forming, I use the false shoulder method,neck up to 260 first, then back down to .243) and remove the firing spring so I know the brass just fits. You can't just assume the bullet will hold the brass against the bolt face!

The Norma 6XC brass MAYBE the way to go, wish I could get some in Canada without all the permits etc. The Norma brass looks as if it will fill my 1.918" lengthed 6-250 chamber very nicely were the Lapua 6.5x47 will come up short for this case, or I'd use it.

Are you sure that it is not just the offset buldge which happens when your brass is a few thou undersized to your chamber. The head is solid brass so it won't expand,at normal load pressure anyway) so the budge starts at the web. When your un-fire but formed,without a false shoulder) case is in the chamber, it rests on the bottom of it,gravity), and when you fire it, it expands to fill the chamber. As it's already against the bottom of the chamber wall, it has no where to expand there so you get the buldge everywhere else around it.

inspite of your thinking that your headspace is near "0", it obviously is not. Your problem started when you fire formed the brass on the first firing.

I do not know if you know how to measure how much the brass grows or not, here is what I do. I use a 30 caliber Davidson ojive guage on my dial caliper. I insert the neck of the new piece of unfired brass into the 30 caliber ojive guage and measure the lenght of the shoulder to base of the case. I then fire the case with a stiff load and re-measure the case. Now, you know how much headspace you have on a new unfired round.

When it comes to wild cats, gunsmiths are all over the map in their headspacing. I always give a gunsmith 10 unfired cases of the wild cat that I want him to headspace the chamber with. If a gunsmith will not use my cases to headspace the chamber with, I know that I will for sure have problems similar to yours...been there...done that.....

A stony point over size ojive guage can be used the same way as the Davidson.

There is a chance that you are bumping back the shoulder on the case, but I would think that you would feel it when you were sizing the cases.

You may have some options other than re-headspacing the barrel if you find that the chamber is a bit long, but you have to know exactly how much that brass is stretching on the fireforming stage.
