358 gremlin or 358x39

What is the bottom line requirement?

Do you have to have 35 or larger and some length or shorter (like Indiana rules)? Straight wall (Ohio rules)? Do you need to stick with the PPC bolt face or can you open it to standard bolt face?

If you want a nice varmint and deer cartridge on the PPC rum, but don’t have to have 35 cal, you can go 6.5 Grendel or open it up to 30 to make a 30 Major (see @gunsandgunsmithing for reamer and dies).

if you need the ppc rim and 35 cal, talk to Mike about it and use the standard Grendel case. The same ideas as the 30 Major apply. Just at 35 vs 30.

If you can open it to 473, many options open for you using the same idea and the BR case.

The 350 legend has a 223 rim. Other than availability of factory ammo and being Ohio legal, I see nothing to recommend it.

No requirements for where I hunt.

Working with what I have on hand.
Howa mini receiver 223 and ppc bolts. Magazine oal max so it stays a repeater.

This whole project is for a fun medium bore lighter weight repeating hunting rifle.

I may have stumbled on another option

357 herrett rimless.

Use a 357 herrett reamer and dies .

Size up 6.8spc and fire form.

I am looking into the cartridge measurements and I may need to make a shorter version the 357 herrett. I will keep you all updated.

Be interesting and good to see the Herrett revived some what. I don’t think there has been anything done with published data that is NEW since the late 80’s.

+1...A 10" 357 Herrett Contender is still what I hunt with most often these days and to date taken my biggest buck with one using a 180 gr XTP. It's a nice round and I'd also be happy to see some renewed interest in it although I understand why a rimmed case that requires a lot of case prep isn't exactly setting sales records :D. I'd never heard of a rimless version on the 6.8 case but that would sure make life easier cutting down on all the trimming of the 30-30 route.

I located some 6.8spc brass locally and I have ordered a set of 357 herrett dies.

I am going to be busy for the next week or so. After the dies arrive I will do a proof of concept run and measure brass and check against the magazines for length and possibly function in a stripped receiver.

I've built .375 and . 338 versions off the grendel case. This ones a 375 on a CZ 527.

.358 seemed redundant after that ?

.358
More easily findable projectiles that will expand at what speeds the case size will deliver, as far as a hunting cartridge. 357/358 will offer a very large spread of styles, weights and types from 100ish all the way up to 200 plus.
Don’t get me wrong I am a .338 and .375 fan, most, not all are designed for the magnums.

Minus the OH/IN kind of requirements, the only value that I see in a larger bore is in a subsonic application.

Other than that, the efficient way to get the energy for a game rifle is via velocity.

But, that’s about practicality. We do this for fun, not practicality

Update. Received the hornady dies. Went about sizing some cases. The sizing went well with lots of lube. No lost or cracked cases.

The results were a case 1.645 overall length. The herrett has a length of 1.750. That leaves a difference of 0.105 shorter with the new cases

After thinking and measuring etc. I have decided to pursue this project with the following solutions/accommodations. I am going to use a 357 herrett reamer and "short chamber" by 0.115" that will put the cases .010 longer than the chamber allowing me to set the die/case length for proper length/jam prior to fire forming.

The other way would be to blow the case forward and have a shorter neck. For fire forming I would most likely have to do a false shoulder to seat the cases in the chamber correctly. But that still leaves a very long neck in the chamber and brass necks that will be .115 short.

Pictures are of some fast dummy rounds with 158 remington bullet, 180 speer , and a 200 hornady round nose. The speer 180 spire point is loaded as lo g as the magazine allows at 2.320"

Unless I missed something, 6.8 is different rim diameter than either of your bolts. Are you opening the 223 bolt up then?

I am inclined to the necked-up AK round. My application would be in an AR-15, for two reasons.
1. ease of forming.
2. AK mags are plentiful for the A15.

Be sure to share your load data with us.

Adam in WI , yes I may have to modify one of the bolts. I have not decided how yet. Either a reducing ring for the ak volt or opening the 223 bolt up. Ejector pin placement and extractor engagement will determine if I need to make changes.

Idahosharpshooter, I am going to start with 357 herrett loads and work up from there.

Also found starline is offering 6.8 basic brass

You've probably already considered this but I'll mention it anyway, if you buy a 357 Herrett reamer check that it's set-up the way you want for the bullets you're shooting. The T/C chambers I've had have a very long freebore while another aftermarket barrel I have is very short. Neither has been ideal IMO.

Edit...Thanks for the update. That basic brass from Starline would sure make case forming easier.

I ordered the basic brass from starline, have a stock on the way, aluminum bottom metal to replace the crap plastic factory bottom piece,

I am planning on renting a reamer , so I emailed them to see about getting a print. If it doesnt look good I guess I am going to buy one.

Long story short I guess things are moving along.

I will be renting the reamer from 4d. the aluminum bottom metal showed up and looks good. This is the 3rd piece from dip that looks good and works well. Brass from starline arrived, and some absolutely wonderful news, when sized it measures 1.738-1.740 . that is close to the herrett oal of 1.75. Much closer than the 6.8spc formed cases. Pictures show the difference.

4 rounds sit well in the magazine. And the metal replacement holds the magazine much tighter than the plastic garbage did.

Christmas wish.
Howa Mini, single shot and blind box repeater, a $10 not .10 safety, actions only, AND undesignated so a bolt pistol possibility.
Stainless would be a nice option, but I am a blue steel guy at heart.

DIP is supposedly working on a flush mag set up of some sort.
I find these minis, addicting. I bought one in .222. As if that wasn’t enough two more are in the rack. Hard to beat for a $300 rifle.
