358 gremlin or 358x39

The Russian cartridge is what started all this off. Lack of availability is what lead me down this path.

The 35 remington was an option until brass availability and length really messed my plans up. Also I have a 35 remington. So something different.

Looks like with the extra length of the starline basic brass I may be able to do a full depth 357 herrett chamber.

You might also be able to use 30 remington brass. I think Grafs has some.

Apache----you must have read my mind, I have a 35 rem reamer and a set of 35 rem dies I was going to shorten and use the x39 case. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Update, rental reamer showed up. Forgot to open the 223 bolt face. So j had to do that first. Then Fitted and reamed the barrel. Assembled the rifle , minor feed ramp adjustment for smooth feeding.

I sized 50 cases in one pass with hornady dies. Cases all survived with no cracks. Loaded with 158 xtp bullets for fireforming and sight in.

Pictures to follow

So here is the update. Everything went well. Shooting is pleasant, feeding is good, and accuracy was about 1 1/2 " at 100.

Rifle has a #3 contour 1-14 twist shilen cm barrel cut at 18" long.

Boyd's stock , dip bottom metal, leupold rings and bases. Funny thing remington 700 bases worked on this little action.

Brass did not shorten during firing. Cases extracted easily with a load of 33 grains accurate1680. Large fireball with low recoil. I will be using a chronograph in the near future for development. Right now I just can't seem to get the damn thing to work consistently. Might be time for a lab radar.

I will be ordering some heavier bullets in The 180-200 gr range. And i will be trying different powders to try and get more velocity. The 357 herrett is based off the 30-30 case and a fairly medium pressure. With the basic 6.8 brass I am sure pressure and speed can go up slightly. Talked with barnes and their 35 caliber bullets work in the 1900-2100 fps range. Looking at book values I may be able to reach that but quick load and trial will tell me for sure.

Mathias, this looks like a great result for 358 gremlin. Have you found any subsonic loadings that work well? How about 180-200 grain supers?

Greenjeeper- that rifle got disassembled and rebuilt into a 6.5 grendel. I could not get much better groups than 1.5 - 1.25 @100. The velocity was there and brass was pretty good. I suspect the bullets were the limiting factor. So after my fun I tore it down and re built it. I will post pictures at some point.
