358 gremlin or 358x39

Anyone have first hand experience with a 358 gremlin or any variation of the 358x39 ? Necked up 7.62x39? Thanks

Nope, I have a 358 winchester. The main reason for this line if inquiry I'd for a howa mini action. I have a 7.62x39 bolt for it. Thanks though.

After looking around for a while, checking cartridges of the world, and scouring websites the 358 gremlin looks great but dies are difficult to find. Reamers are available, hornady will not sell a die set to me without permission from a gentleman from Indiana.

That leads me to the 350 legend. Factory rounds are loaded with .355 bullets with .355 bore barrel. The reamer print shows that .358 bullets can be used if hand loaded. There are a couple places using 358 bore barrels and they state handloading only.

If I can not find a set of 358 gremlin dies I will go with the 350 legend on a true .358 bore barrel.

C&H for dies maybe?

35 Grendel or 35x39AI. Pretty much all of Ackley’s cartridges have been modified just very slightly then renamed a better mouse trap.
The 300 Whisper was one of the JDJ cartridges, then the .300BO came out and folks just had to have one.

I see no issue in doing your own or see what is available.

Zero333- I have two bolts one for ppc/aka and a223

Also I would most likely trim the rim on a 470 case to fit the Ppc diameter if needed.

Idaho sharp shooter- the 358 socom would be interesting. Problem becomes magazines and the howa plastic mag is difficult to modify well.

Howdy!

if you are considering the .350 Legend, perhaps A wildcat would also work for you ?

The 7-33 Sako was a 7mm iteration of the longest 9mm case Sako was able to draw w/ its WWII-era machinery.

Simply necking 7-33 back up to 9mm ( which is same calibre as the .350 Legend, and the calibre 7-33 starts out at ) would give you a straight- walled .35 cal case 1.315”lg; I believe.

The rim diam would be .397”....about .017 larger in diam than the .223’s rim diam.

You did not sound all that interested in a case w/ .470” rim diam, other wise I might have suggested you take a look @ the .357 Auto Mag.

I formed cases out of both Norma and Lapua BR braaa ( SR primed ).
Ran mine in a single-shot benchrest rest action as a true .358” cal.
That allowed me to shoot .35 calibre rifle bullets through a custom 22” SS
1-16 twist 5-groove, made by Red Scherer of NE Indiana ( 1977 ).

Was minute-of-groundhog accurate out to 350yd ( longest shot I took with
it ). And no.... I did not try it on deer.

With regards,

Very cool idea , a longer version of the 9mm magnum. Thanks for the input. I will look into it.
