338 brake on a 30 cal rifle

Hey all - is there a big loss of efficiency when using a 338-bored muzzle brake on a 30 cal gun? or is it not that critical?

My 300wsm barrel is threaded 3/4-24, and the brake is only available with that thread in 338 size.

Don't know but have thoughts since I have used an old brake larger than the original caliber it was made for. The purpose of the brake is to reduce recoil. It is not a "tuner brake" that has an additional accuracy potential. All brakes added to a tuned barrel, like even the Magnespeed chronograph, affect the barrel vibration pattern. Some might improve, some do nothing, some might have a deleterious affect. You will not know until you try but accuracy was NOT your question.

I think you are concerned about recoil reduction. All those side ports are for recoil reduction. A little more space around the bullet and gasses leaving may slightly change the recoil reduction. It would take two brakes of different bore sizes and some measuring device to really know. I say nuts to opinions, get it on and see if you like it. Doubt it would not decrease recoil. Accuracy affects are unknown until you try but that's another issue.

I have a 300 Wby/338 Edge switch bbl rig. The 338 break works GREAT on the 300. I have a 30 cal break for my 300 WBY's, 300 WSM's and it also works great for my 26 cal tubes I shoot off of the same platform. I have a 6.5 mm break that works good on my 6mm and .224 cal tubes on another platform.

It will work fine!!!

Nathan will make what you need . the brake will not be as efficient with the oversized hole . in one of the youtube videos Nathan says the one brake he tested was not a fair test , due to the brake being sized for a larger caliber .

I run a Suerfire .338 suppressor adapter on my 6.5 Creedmoor and my .308 and it cuts recoil just fine. No issues running a bigger brake.

Tests have shown that certain Size holes contribute to accuracy and efficiency of brakes. Don't remember where I read it but it was a very detailed test with multiple guns and making the holes bigger. A search of the Internet should find it. Matt

Thanks for that info - I'll try to find it!

I currently have a Fat B*stard brake on that gun, so I'll be able to swap the brakes to suit the loads as necessary. Would I be wrong that the Armalite brake has an indexing nut?

I think a brake has to have two functions. Reduce recoil and be able to put the bullets into one hole (up to 300 yds,) as well. If you can't hit what you are aiming at, why shoot.
