338-223 Straight/338 Thumper?

I'd be more interested in it with a 285 or 300 gn slug... ;) Kinda like a super .300 Black Out. But I'm sure someone has already done this?

JD Jones has two 338 Whispers based on 221 fireball or 7 BR case.

The .338 Whisper is a wildcat cartridge in the Whisper family, a group of cartridges developed in the early 1990s by J.D. Jones of SSK Industries.[1]Unlike the smaller caliber cartridges in the Whisper family, loads for the .338 Whisper are mainly limited to subsonic velocities.[2]

I have the 338 Whisper based on the 7 BR case. Hornady 285 gr and Nolser 300 gr bullets. 7 BR case is 1.5 inches long and Nosler 300 gr is 1.7 inches.

338 Whisper is a great round too, but the 338 Thumper is straight walled- which could make it legal for deer in some places.

Legal for deer but not enough velocity to have bullet expand and do any damage...same problem with the 300 blackout/whisper but at least there are a few bullets designed for those that will expand.

Isn't there something about the design on the legend that makes it more than just a modified 223 case? From the very little I've read it isn't a simple task like a 300BO, 338 Thumper etc.

The legend case has a rebated rim with a base larger than a .223, .390" vs .376". You really can't convert anything to 350 legend that I know of.

So has anyone built an elephant stopping cartridge that will feed well from a AR mag that will not blow the AR to bits or hammer the shooter with insane recoil? The world really needs an AR platform dangerous game cartridge for the Big 5 of Africa.

Maybe another 20 or 30 heavy subsonic cartridges.

Maybe a paper patched pumpkin ball pressed into the 5.56 cartridge of .54. Maybe black powder? Not sure how a suppressor will deal with a paper patched pumpkin ball but why not? I could be wrong but I do not think anyone has done this yet could be a market for it if all one needs is a different upper. Maybe we could take it one step further and make an AR single shot black powder muzzle loader with 209 primers.

Anyone make a black powder muzzle loader with a suppressor for the AR platform? LOL....Sorry could not help myself I thought this was hilarious! Take it as humor as it was meant to get a laugh!

I should maybe send this to PSA or DPMS and see if they can make it happen? LOL Laugh guys laugh! Cheers!

Interesting reply, thanks.

The AR platform was excluded in the first post, and no mention of a suppressor was made, but appreciate the input;)

Why not go with a rimless 357 Maximum based on the 223 cartridge? You can go bolt gun with it, and someone on another board was coordinating a group purchase of AR barrels. Use 38 Special or 357 Magnum bullets.

The problem with a .355”+ bullet in a .223 case is unless you turn the necks, you can end up with a reverse taper. You really need .010” or less neck thickness.

The idea of a .338 bullet holds merit now more than when the link posted was done because of the new “long range hunting” bullets that are available.

If you are not constrained with typical mag length of 2.260” by using an AI pattern .223 Mag where 2.325”+ is possible, then use .222 Magnum brass instead of .223 to gain about 4 grains or more of powder capacity. With this you could probably get close to 2000 fps, maybe more with a 250+ grain bullet. Same goes for a single shot.

That would be an effective range of 300 hundred yards easily. Terminal velocity would be around 1600 fps with 1500 pounds of energy.

Just depends on your expectations and willingness to think outside the box.
