30BR with H322

N130 is the 2nd most popular go to powder for a 30BR.
I knew it was at one time but kinda surprised no one had brought it up.....l have two go to loads for my rifle and one is with the n130 and the other is with the h4198.One load for cloudy overcast days and the other for those nice sunny days.Dont laugh works fir meand Yes running .004 neck tension...

With thirty caliber cartridges, used in point-blank BR rifles (.308Win.; 30x44's; 30x47; etc.), going back 30+ years, I have never seen 0.004", or greater "neck-tension" fail to deliver top notch performance, or, more especially, degrade precision.
Occasionally less "works" ok.
Frequently, following a conversation regarding "tuning", where I recommend going from the -0.002, or, -0.003" being used, to 0.004", or more, under the loaded-round neck-diameter, I get a call back something like' "it was like turning on the lights" . . .;)RG

P.S. I don't recall who deserves the credit: "The only absolute is that NOTHING is ABSOLUTE." I like that almost as well as, "that'll never work" . . .:D

Well years ago in Maine here where SR score shooting started, there was a shooter (who still shoots) who was friendly with this broad at Kaltron in Illinois and he use to get a discount on powder so everyone up here and a few guy's in MD would buy a whole pallet of N130 and some 133. Then the price of the powder took off and it was cheaper to buy 4198 and I'm about the only one who uses N130 up here. I only use it in a few calibers. N130 doesn't work as well as 4198 in the cold and when we start the season up here the 1st weekend in April we are shooting in 20 degree weather. I've shot N120, N130, LT30 & 32,Norma 200 & 201, AA2015BR, AA1680. X-Terminator, RL7, H322, TAC, SMP735, XMR2015, H & IMR 4198, and W680 in a 30BR. The 680 totally ruined the primer pockets on some new brass but boy were the speeds up there. When I first started, all the guy's up here told me to just stick with H4198 and be done with it. They said don't try to reinvent the wheel. I should of listened to them. Now I mostly shoot 4198 and my scores have improved since sticking with a proven powder. I've learned it's ok to screw around and experiment with different stuff but when u go to a match, stick with what works.

Yeah was kinda an ah ha moment for me when I went to more neck tension on the 30br.Im no expert but when Mr.Robinett (bib bullets) speaks about the 30br I listen...My experience mimicks JimPag’s also on n130 powder...

Jimmymac: what's your seating depth? And what bullets are you using?

Any idea what velocity your getting compared to 4198?
IMO the part that is most important in his post is where he compares the weights of the same volumes of H4198 and H322. Sometimes I think that especially for small cases that are going to have capacity issues for the best loads that powder density gets overlooked. What is the most important in those cases is what pressure/velocity is available from a given powder at the point where you cannot increase the load due to case volume. The extreme case comes comparing typical stick powers to ball in the same case. In that case, a powder that may have a slower burn rate can actually make more pressure because it is denser and you can get quite a bit more of it (by weight) in the case. Finally, I think that too may shooters become obsessed with small differences in velocity, even very good ones. Personally, I have never heard of a match where velocity trumps group size or score.

From my Redding 3BR measure, the first pic is H4198. Not changing the setting, the second picture is H322. Excuse the pic quality.

This is the case fill with these charges. Left is the H4198, right is H322.

Stick some lead in the end of 5 of them and lets see the difference. ;]

Somewhere within the 4 pages of this topic someone may have mentioned..322 is like 4198..pretty much non-existent..least in my neck of the woods.
Friend of mine gave me some 2015 powder which by the burn table is neighbors with 322. I simply swapped powder while leaving everything else alone based on 4198 tuned load,,and got this in return.. little mid 1's 5 shot cluster. Tuning would most likely tighten this up quite a bit, speed was about 2975 average.
For the moment the topic might be more about what's available and what can be used successfully in leu of proven powders vs what folks have on their shelf in limited qty's. I still intend to aquire N130 and run with it. Just a nod to a conversation with Randy R about what powders would and should work in the ever forgiving 30BR.

I don't know Bob not picking on ya, but there doesn't look like there is enough room to tighten that group up. Unless you missed the paper.

Bob, you're doing it like a real BR type...getting out there and finding out for yourself. -Al
