Yeah. We only have one gun that did not to transonic well with 168s. My Rem 700 20" 12 twist would fan bullets all over a 10 yard radius at 1000 yards. I read something about the boat tail angle being a factor.Just banging steel.... doesn't matter if they are supersonic. Many of the heavier 308 bullets made the transition well. The older 1000 yard paper shooter used 175 to 240 and many of them went through the target at less than supersonic speeds. They shot well enough to bang steel. If you want to compete that is a different answer.
In addition to those already mentioned, you'll definitely want to check out the new 169 SMK's.Besides the 175SMK, what are the best bullets for banging steel at 1000yds with a 22" 1-10 twist .308 Win?
Acloco I haven't shot a 308 at 1000yds in my life, Always had something considerably faster. The reason I haven't is i was told out of short barrels like the OP mentioned it is almost impossible to keep a 168 supersonic at 1000. Has this changed? I would love to be able to shoot my 308 1000yds.
178 amax is a great bullet, also 178 matchIn addition, I also like the old 178 Amax in my 22".
Sounds more like the 20 moa rail was on backwards.Make sure you have enough scope to dial up to 1000 yards. I shot in a 600 yard match with a guy shooting a .308 with a 50X March scope and he was a 1/4 turn away on being maxed out with his elevation.....and he needed another 25+ minutes to get there....
He only had a 0 MOA rail on his rifle. I shoot a 6.5 CM and from 600 to 1000 is around 18 more minutes for me to dial up. So I estimated he would probably need that much more to do it.Sounds more like the 20 moa rail was on backwards.
I don't get this. Is it an equipment issue or shooter issue? 20" 308s easily get hits at 1000. It's not the BEST option, but it'll get there with good ammo.At the 20" and under barrel length, it is a maybe they will hit anything past 800. Have seen ONE 18" barrel that would still get the job done at 900, but nothing at 1K.
