.308 Win bullet for 1000yds

The 175 SMK may have been developed specifically for and in Remington M-24’s. Of course a good bullet doesn't lose that characteristic, but these are one hole bullets through a heavy 700..
My rifle just doesn't like them.. well, doesn't like the newer ones.. I had some FGMM 175SMK from 2016 that shot real well. The new box of FGMM and the box of 500 bullets I got (both 175smks) both have a base to ogive about .020" longer than the old ones, and my gun will have none of that.. Tried seating them back further so far to no avail. Shot the last of my 2016 FGMM box the same day as some new FGMM and some reloads. Old FGMM shot .3 moa, the other stuff was around 1.2 moa. Hence the reason for this post. I'm probably a .25 moa shooter or bigger I'd guess. Never shot a rifle and ammo that would show me where I am.

During load development the 169 SMK was the most accurate bullet I have ever shot. I’ve taken both the 169SMK and the 175SMK to 1000 yards. The one time I shot both bullets same day, the 175s were more consistent. I cannot get back to my 1000 yard range for a few weeks but I am going to shoot both again along with the 185 juggernaut

Are the replies here centered around jcc's question?
22" barrel, 1-10 twist, .308?

Those unique limitations came to my attention in the last couple of months talking to a couple of prior state champions in LR service rifle.

Specifically, if one wants to shoot the M1A at 1,000 yards, that’s the barrel length before the flash suppressor, and before the tube’s end, some gas pressure is bled off.

Those confines are very real, the cartridge should be depressible into a standard magazine and TR-like pressures would tear up a very expensive gun and possibly disable the operating rod.

They recommended this bullet and the Berger 185. I wondered myself, and still do, why the Lapua 155 scenar would not be about ideal for the job.

As a lighter bullet, it probably needs less barrel length to achieve it’s needed velocity than a heavier bullet, although the scenar line does tend toward a long bearing surface for its weight, mirroring the pressure of starting a heavier bullet. But they are comfortably over supersonic at sea level at 1,000 yards.

I have both some 178 Hornady BTHPs and some 169 SMKs inbound. My rifle seems to like the 168 SMKs, so maybe the 169 will be the ticket.

DVid, the 155 Scenar works beautifully in that scenario at 2620 in mild conditions.

With the 178gr Hornady HPBT, I found jam and loaded all to jam - .020".. increased the charge from start load up to a respectable speed in 1gr increments to check for pressure.. then loaded 5 when I got to 2650 (with no pressure signs). Shot these at a steel plate at 200yds and they grouped just under an inch.. So less that 20 rounds in, but pretty good start from just a short test. Waiting on a Wilson seater and K&M arbor press to do further load development, but looks promising so far. If I can get solid .5 moa at distance I'll be happy with that.

OP

Ive been using the 180 berger elite hunters in mine. With powerpro 2000 and 26” they are just under 2800 fps out of my 308. Ive shot them to 970 so far and tried a few at 1380 but couldnt see splash where i shoot so i stopped. I figured out my dope was way off past 1000, so might be some bc variation as its goin transonic i need to account for in the ballistic app. But ive shot them out of my 300 wsm to a mile also about transonic and seemed to group ok around the rock i was shooting at. Have a 16” steel plate there. Hit around it but never got a hit. Switched to the 208 long range hyb and its much better as expected but never tried it in the 308

I also wanna try the 165 tipped gamekings i got running at 2950. They shoot very well at 100 so far but have not stretched the legs
