.308 Win bullet for 1000yds

Acloco I haven't shot a 308 at 1000yds in my life, Always had something considerably faster. The reason I haven't is i was told out of short barrels like the OP mentioned it is almost impossible to keep a 168 supersonic at 1000. Has this changed? I would love to be able to shoot my 308 1000yds.

Just banging steel.... doesn't matter if they are supersonic. Many of the heavier 308 bullets made the transition well. The older 1000 yard paper shooter used 175 to 240 and many of them went through the target at less than supersonic speeds. They shot well enough to bang steel. If you want to compete that is a different answer.

As mentioned no need to stay supersonic to get to 1000+. Just needs to go transonic fine. The 168 SMK sucks at that and what gave 168s a bad name. The 168 ELD-M works great to 1000+. I shoot them in my match rifle and have shot them to 1250 yards and they are accurate. Many newer higher BC bullets like the 168 ELD-M out there now. The old 175 SMK is ok but lower BC so I wouldn't use it unless you had a bunch.

Yeah. We only have one gun that did not to transonic well with 168s. My Rem 700 20" 12 twist would fan bullets all over a 10 yard radius at 1000 yards. I read something about the boat tail angle being a factor.

Other than that, 175 SMK is the easy button for 1k shooting.

As others have stated, does not need to be supersonic to hit the paper or the steel.

At least once, every year, I help out with some close to 1K training. Rain/Shine/Snow/or Wind - we shoot.

At the 20" and under barrel length, it is a maybe they will hit anything past 800. Have seen ONE 18" barrel that would still get the job done at 900, but nothing at 1K.

22" barrel, as the original poster is using, is probable at 1K - all depends on the barrel.

LOTS of Hornady TAP 168's are the norm. Occasionally see a 30/06 in the mix. ONE 7 Mag. Starting to see 6.5 creeds.

For my area, just like the BR shooters, the wind call is the main deciding factor.

In our exercise, we also find out who KNOWS their equipment (90% don't), who has GOOD experience and/or previous training, and the occasional lucky person who has little experience, but ends up being a rockstar during quals.

ebb - funny that you mention speed. At the end of the week, the instructor provides some last tidbits of info. One of the items is - YOU cannot overcome wind/distance/you....with anything. I raised my hand two years ago (and got "the look").....I said, one thing will help with two of those items.....SPEED! He smiled, chuckled, and said, yes........but the ought EIGHT is what most have.....play the hand you are dealt......and KNOW IT!

Make sure you have enough scope to dial up to 1000 yards. I shot in a 600 yard match with a guy shooting a .308 with a 50X March scope and he was a 1/4 turn away on being maxed out with his elevation.....and he needed another 25+ minutes to get there....

Check out the 176gr A-Tip bullets. These are hands down my favorite and most consistent bullets I've used. Unfortunately, they aren't cheap though.

I don't even have to sort them they are so consistent. They are packaged in sequence, so you can see the extreme variation from the first compared to last...which is very minimal in my experience. They also aren't washed or tumbled at the factory to avoid small dings and scuffs...instead they provide a cloth to clean the lubricant off before loading.

I buy these whenever I find a decent deal and will buy lots of them when I do.
