308 Win 600yd group ?

I have a 600yd range at home that we have family & friends matches . I bought a 700 308 Varmint and put it in a good stock and replaced the trigger . Rifle shoots great out to about 300 yds . Thinking about getting the action trued and a rebarrel . My question is what are realistic groups at 600yds with a 308 ? Not the once in awhile 3 shot amazing group but the average 5 shot groups shooting in good conditions .

trued is not a good investment if you have to pay for it.
the br record was held by a 308 for a long time 5 shot.....0.6x ?
what are you shooting against ?
6br is a better choice( I have several 308's I like them)
tell us more about the specific goal and shooting position

All the guys asking is whats a decent expectation for a 308 at 600 yards. Didnt ask for caliber opinions...

6 inch circle would be moa. Set up clay targets. Thats about 4.5 inches.. shoot clays. Anything under 4 inches is fairly good.
Under 3 inch groups is really good. Under two inches and less is hella good.
 
not, imho
i have a heavy bbl SAVAGE that shoots 185's 1/2 moa at 6009 AS INSIDE the 600 x ring.
expectations should be higher with a rem and a quality bbl

Even under mild wind conditions, a .308 Win rifle with a load capable of repeatedly shooting 5-shot groups in the 0.25 MOA range at 100 yds will not typically hold anywhere close to that at 600 yd. Other external factors, such as the wind and the shooter themselves, become much larger sources of error at 600 yd. I'd be quite happy with reproducible 0.5 MOA to 0.75 MOA 5-shot groups with such a setup at 600 yd under relatively benign wind conditions. You might easily get groups smaller than that from time to time, but probably not on average. At 600 yd, a 1 mph wind full value wind will be worth ~0.20 to 0.25 MOA deflection, and accurately calling such a small change in wind speed or direction, or catching every single little puff of breeze across the entire length of the range is not a realistic expectation.
 
Thanks for your replies . I'm just trying to decide if I want to go further with my 308 project . Hitting clays at 600 repeatedly would be acceptable to me . Ned Ludd , I am seeing exactly what you are saying with this factory barreled rifle as it is a consistent .5 moa at 100 yds but much closer to 1 moa at 600 .

That's not bad at all. FWIW - there are some nice people (or maybe elves???) that always seem to leave a few intact orange shotgun clays on the 600 yd berm, which I like to break with my fouling/sighting shots. However, shooting practice groups and competing provides a little better enjoyment and motivation for me over the long run. My .308 Win F-TR loads are generally capable of 0.25 to 0.35 MOA 5-shot groups at 100 yd. Although I have fired plenty of 200 point cleans in midrange matches at 600 yd with these rifles and loads, I have also shot many, many relays where I dropped at least one point or more. Because the F-Class 10-ring is 6" in diameter, or approximately 1 MOA, not being able to shoot a clean every single time tells you how much a typical .308 Win load opens up as the distance increases. If we could consistently shoot groups at 600 yd with the exact same angular dispersion we can hold at 100 yd, F-TR shooters would be cleaning the target virtually every single time they went to the line. Fortunately, F-TR hasn't quite reached that point yet, even though it's becoming almost boringly regular for the F-Open shooters to clean targets at 600 yd with the slight ballistic advantages of the cartridges/loads they typically use.
 
I bought a M700 .308W (RR serial #), put the barreled action in a good stock with a good trigger, shot three different groups on three different days, 20 rounds groups at 300yds with less than 1MOA vertical and 1.25 MOA horizontal using 155gr 2156 SMKs and H-335.
Shot one 20 shot group at 600yds using 150gr SMKs and H-335, score was 188-5 on the MR-1 target.
All four groups were shot prone using a sling and scope and rounds were loaded at magazine length with no load development. Don’t believe H-335 is the ideal powder but it worked.
Bought the rifle on sale for the action, decided to try it before replacing the barrel. Decided to shoot it as is at 200yds until it doesn’t hold the 10 ring.
Shooting at orange clay birds would be a VG test.
All barrels are different, I lucked out with the purchase.

You need to shoot on my primary range (Diggle in northern England). Last Saturday's F match was won in Open with 84.5v (184.5x in US scoring) and only 4 competitors in that class broke 80. Highest score of the day was 93.3v from the F/TR winner who was 10 full points clear of the second place man. (Don't ask me how - I wasn't there having reacted to the weather forecast.)

Although this was an exceptionally windy day, 600 yard possibles are unusual in any season on this range such is the range of wind directions and strengths, their changing between shots and the time intervals between shots that pairs shooting puts into the process. The upside to this situation is it makes the shooting much interesting than having 20 people scoring 100s and loads of V countbacks / ties. The downside is that nearly all the top half dozen nowadays are shooting 284, Shehane, SAUMs, and WSMs and one or two very hot 6.5 Creedmoors at a distance where I'd prefer to see people with 6.5X47s and suchlike have a chance of a top three place. Hardly anybody now shoots sixes in our 600 yard matches unless it's forecast to be an unusually quiet day.
 
CC do you reload? Friends and I have had fun with steel drums at 400 yards, with cowboy/sharps rifles. Sounds like the 308 is running factory ammo, if that is the case. I would have a good smith install a custom barrel chambered for your favorite factory match ammo. Then it will be the shooter that hits a clay at 600.

WHILE THE 155 IS A GOOD BULLET is not an ideal choice.
look at 175 to 200( I use berger 175, lapua 185,sie 175)
n140/540 powder
imr 4064
rl15
fed 210/210m
lapua brass, maybe some of the other custom brass.
 
If you want to have an easy (-ish) time, look up viht vouhri reloading for their powders and lapua bullets. They offer an accurate load for out to 600-800 yards. Some fine tuning may be required, but we have used it in a variety of different rifles, and it's there abouts good to go.
Don't expect it to go further, as at sea level, it goes subsonic before 1k

How bout 10 shots at 600 , are ya still .5 Moa ?
I’d like to see those easy targets and not just a wallet pop,
I’ve shot quite a bit of 600 with my 308 my best is around 4 inches 91 points
