$50 308 Barrel

This is one of the $50 barrels I bought off here last week . 13 twist 308 . Certainly surprised .First group out of cold and clean sub1/2 . Moved seating depth a little and shot incredible . Shot 600 yds in the rain and wind 2 1/2 inch . I know these are 3 shot groups and I'm gonna get slammed for posting them but I'm looking forward to load development in better conditions . Best $50 I've spent .IMG_20200829_130035461.jpg IMG_20200829_111557935_HDR.jpg

is that a factory barrel?

Shot 600 yds in the rain and wind 2 1/2 inch .

I've experienced and seen some incredible groups shot in the rain and wind... hmmm. Maybe we should pray for rain and wind instead of a let off or a few seconds of consistent conditions?;):D

Nice groups and nice buy on the barrel. I won't slam you for 3 shots only.
My benchmark is as long as it's a sub 1" group at 100 I consider it a good shooting barrel.
When I shoot for groups with 5 shots I always have flyers that is expected, but I keep on trying to get them tighter and that's what keeps me shooting.
3 shots is more economical and tells me what I really need to know generally with my hand loads for my hunting rifles.

I've had great luck with used barrels, especially if they are in 30cal. I have picked up 2 on here recently, a 31" Brux 1-10 and a 28" Kreiger 1-10, both chambered in 308.

I'm experimenting with a couple builds and cartridges so it affords me the ability to do that without spending $500 to have a quality blank turned each time. I'm just starting out into the world of bench rest and shooting beyond 1k yds. So it works out well for me to use these barrels until I'm confident in what barrel I want to have made new.

The 31" Brux will stay as is and will allow me to build an F-TR rifle that I can take out and try in some local F class competitions. The 28" Kreiger will get rechambered into a 300WM that I'll build into the rifle I use to try at 1760yds. So even though they have exceeded their use to the previous owners, they are perfect for the novice like me to cut my teeth on...

I used to buy a lot of used up high power barrels in 6.5-284 that were roasted for 2-4” in the lands. Cut enough off at the breech and contour to 18-22” ar15 and chamber in 6.5 Grendel. Those barrels shot phenomenal.

When Montana Rifleman Barrel company stopped selling to consumers and went totally to manufacturers they sold off all the barrels the had in stock for $50 each and $20 to contour to any taper you wanted. I bought 3, 2 have been chambered and shoot great. My friend bought 8 or 9 and the ones he had chambered all shot good but one took some work to make it shoot. i wish i had bought them all. I suppose I have a similar story.

2 weeks ago I posed asking if someone had a decent 1-8 6mm I could chop off and test my new 103 grn bullets in.

A fellow shooter obliged me, Sent me a nice Krieger HV taper that I was able to salvage 27 1/2 inches out of.

this just might be the best 1-8 twist barrel I have ever shot.

Here are three 5 shot groups at 200 yards last Sunday.26AD5FD5-D777-4796-9DBB-5DCDE290E81F.jpeg
