7mm-08 potential ?

A few questions about the 7mm - 08:
,1) Realistic speed achievable in a 24-26 inch barrel with 140 gr. bullets?
,2) In a custom rifle with trued Remington 700 action, match grade barrel, etc., what is potential accuracy of a 7mm - 08? I am speaking of 100 yds groups and out to 4-500 yds. Brass would be Lapua .308 necked down to 7mm.

Well, in a Rem Model 7, groups at 100 yards have ranged from the high 3s up to 1.5 MOA for not so good loads. Average is around 0.75MOA. Velocity with the 21" barrel,?) is about 2750 with WW760. Currently using 120s at 2920 fps with IMR 4320.

I would expect both to improve with customization.

Didn't the 7-08 used to be the favored cartridge of the metallic silhouette shooters? Seems to me that's a sport that requires good accuracy as well as decent knock-down.

I know some highpower shooters use it in their match rifles, but it doesn't seem real popular. Seems to me it would be a great compromise - able to shoot bullets with a considerably higher bc than the .308 does, at similar velocities. I always liked the idea of it, but have never set one up.

Then again, I'm just sort of theorizing - never even shot one!

The last one I made was like you said, a trued Rem700 with a ss Lothar Walther barrel at 24". At 100 meters, it is printing groups around 5mm with boring regularity.

12-7 = 5mm, or .197"

7mm-08 and 260 Remington have fallen out of favor with Highpower bolt gunners. Now everyone wants a 6 mm of some kind due to "recoil reduction".

Now, if you run a recoil calculator, the difference isn't all that much between a 6.5 mm 142 at 2700 and a 6 mm 107 at 3000. Slightly less than 1,.92 to be exact) lb-ft. And a 6.5 mm 123 at 2800 is just about the same recoil as a 6 mm 107 @ 3000.
